Just to add some balance for folks reading this thread and trying to decide if the extra weight is worth it … I’m a convert AWAY from an electric coil. Let me explain why. I have an electric coil and I often bring it on business trips -- nice when I’m working late in a hotel and want to stay...
My wife (of 37 years) and I walked the Camino Frances together this Fall. An amazing experience for both of us and such a gift to be able to do it together. We generally walked together, but often I’d drop back to take photos and leisurely catch up or one of us would walk and chat with someone...
We drank tap water and from fountains. I did get sick (my wife didn't) but I have no reason to point a finger at the water -- more likely poor handling of food in restaurants or perhaps a virus. After being sick, I continued to drink from taps and fountains. Not a fan of bottled water -- and...
Tad,
From your description, we brought the identical knife. It was entirely adequate for our needs: cutting cheese for lunch, etc. On the occasions when we bought food and cooked at albergues with kitchens, we used their knives for larger jobs like slicing up onions etc.
Enjoy your camino...
We enjoyed the walk from Finnesterre to Muxia. It's not a seaside walk, but it was the final segment of our Camino and our final day of experiencing the simple sights and sounds of the Camino that we’d come to enjoy so much: the beautiful farmlands, the villages and the forests, witnessing up...
We stayed there this past Sept. Nice old building. I liked the interior -- tasteful and it oozed Camino. Owner is interesting, has lived around the world, done the Camino himself, but is in the process of selling, as he says the Camino has changed and I think he's a bit burnt out. No evening...
Hi Dave,
I have a SolarMio solar charger from SolarFocus. It's a great product and I've used it on extended back country canoe trips in Canada, where I live, when we're totally cut off from electricity for days or weeks and weight is not much of an issue.
I didn't bring it with me on the...
Last month (Sep 2013), I sought medical treatment at a hospital/medical centre in a small town near Burgos, after a bout of diarrhea that had lasted 8 or 9 days. I was treated very well and the entire process was extremely efficient. The receptionist had me fill in a form, took a copy of my...
We used an iPad mini, wifi only, Blogger (free app, easy to use, and you can compose text and pics offline) and a pocket-sized digital camera (happens to be a Canon Powershot ELPH 310 HS). The camera not only takes better pix than an iPad or smartphone, it's way more accessible -- I carried it...
We arrived fairly early at the Jesuit albergue, "Emaus" one of the first albergues in Burgos, about two hours before the two o'clock opening sign. A young Italian couple had arrived just ahead of us. We were milling about, thinking about getting a coffee, when a young man wearing a crucifix...
Hi folks,
We are a couple weeks into our Camino (started in SJPP and now just past Burgos) and thought you might be interested in our blog, updated with thoughts and pix almost daily:

We are REALLY loving the Camino and we thank Camino forum members for all...
We spent two nights with Cimmaron, the first at Orisson, where everyone stands up after the pilgrim meal and introduces themselves. Cimmaron got a huge round of applause. Then, a couple nights later at Zubiri municipal Albergue, I was telling an Aussie fellow I met about the 91 year old, and a...
