VF - Arrival at Calais Port

I did not experience any problem disembarking from the ferry during my 2017 VF pilgrimage. Auto passengers were allowed to disembark first, then they let foot passengers leave. After walking down the gang plank, we were put on a bus and driven a short distance to the main terminal.

    Via Francigena Affordability?

Hi. I walked from Canterbury to Rome during August, September, and October, 2017. A little shy of 90 days. Average daily cost was about $44 USD. That covered everything (food, shelter, repair, fees, etc). France was the cheapest, Switzerland the most expensive. I camped about 50%, pilgrim...

    Via Francigena Affordability?

I agree with Gretal. I walked the VF from Canterbury to Rome in 2017 (Aug 2 - Oct 27). In Italy, pilgrim stays were usually 10 euro. A few we're 15. One was 5. Eating can be cheap if you buy at a grocery and cook your meals. Or simply eat local salami, cheese, fresh breads, yorgurt, etc. The...

    Accommodation costs

I used this site a lot. Dig around it and you will find a spreadsheet of accommodations that is periodically updated by other pilgrms. Some entries are a bit old, but others were very accurate. The low cost pilgrim stays are not easy to find sometimes. Gotta have patience. Same with the low cost...

    Accommodation costs

Hi Jaksample. Yes, for the last 21 days of the Via Francigena the true pilgrim accommodations are about 10 euro. They are very basic bunk beds that are managed by the local church or religious institution. Just make sure you have a credential with stamps. Food can be cheap too if you seek out...

    Lucca to Siena

I walked this section October, 2017. Except for Lucca, I did not need to call ahead. Plenty of beds. About 10 euro.

Sleeping in the Switzerland partof Via Francigena

In addition to Bradypus's spots: TCS Camping Martigny - a campground in Martigney that also has dorm rooms. I snagged one last September for bout 15 franc. Clean, good shower, friendly, even has a bar. Hotel Terminus - in Orsieres. Has dorm beds on top floor. Get a discount with a credential...

    Accommodation costs

Hi Lindie. I walked the entire Via Francigena (Canterbury to Rome) last year. The Italian section had good pilgrim accomodations starting around Santhia. From Santhia to Rome I paid 10 euro on average for a simple pilgrim hostel. Sometimes 15, and 5 on one occasion. They do not include food...

best part for about 5 days

Hi Ofer. Your question is good. I walked the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome in 2017 (Aug - Oct). There are many great 5 day sections. In Tuscany, I thought the best 5 days was from San Miniato to Buonconvento. Buonconvento is one day's walk passed Siena. I did not see many dogs...

    Early Francigena questions

Hi Micheal. I walked the entire VF from Canterbury to Rome (Aug - Oct, 2017). The Fidenza to Rome section is amazing. I was able to stay in pilgrim accommodations (church, monestary, convent, municipal hostel) except for Sarzana and Sutri. For these two cities, there is no pilgrim offering...

    Camping alone all the way

Hi. I just finished walking the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome (Aug 2 - Oct 26). I camped 39 days, pilgrim stay about 41 days, and hotel about 6 days. Half of the camps were wild, the other half in established campgrounds. I echo much of what Bradypus has posted. My experience was very...
