    Beautiful towns on the Norte

It is not a donativo. You can reserve a bed here. It is a difficult building with lots of stairs and a difficult to access bathroom.

    Name translation on Compostela

I already had a discussion with the pilgrim office staff about my name, which is originally Latin, but they “overlatinized” it. I have studied Latin for many years so we ended up in an arcane discussion. In the end they agreed to leave my name as is, Beatriz.

Thoughts on “Santiago - the Camino within”

I concur with many here that the movie was truly one of the worst I've ever seen. It paid zero attention to place. There wasn't a moment in the movie when a town or church was identified, other than the start and finish. There was no food shown (but plenty of beer bottles and cigarettes), no...

Time to get through Madrid Airport Passport control queues/Covid checks?

Arriving into T4 you need a lot more time than the other terminals. Be prepared for a different camino primitivo. Large swaths of this route were affected by the summer wildfires. It’s very sad.

Lines for the Compostela and Certificate for Distance

I was there a week ago. I did not pre register online. I waited about 15 minutes outside in the hot Sun and then about 10 inside and got my Compostela. You can fill out the paperwork with a pen. My biggest issue was the poor attitude of security guards and volunteers. My experience was similar...

    OBSOLETE COVID THREAD Covid positive

You no longer need proof of a negative covid test to get back into the US

How to make reservation for the albergues?

I recommend staying clear of booking.com because it costs the albergue owners money, and they will either match that price or give you a lower one if you call directly. Also, they don't list every bed on booking, which means that if you think there are no beds because that's the only place you...

Anyone taken a horse on the Camino?

Yes, very possible. I met a man and his daughter 8 years ago on the francés (and again 3 years later, Camino magic) who was doing just that. Very doable and fun. You have to make arrangements with farmers for boarding horses along the way, and the albergues can suggest some. Hospitaleros are...

    Reservations?

I had reservations this year from Sarria to Santiago and found them to be completely unnecessary. None of the albergues were full, and I ended up staying at places that were not as nice as the municipal albergues just because I had a reservation.

Door of Mercy at the Cathedral in Santiago?

I was there a couple of weeks ago and you could indeed see the rest of the cathedral entering from that door.

One week Camino- Start in SJPDP

I did it starting in Roncesvalles, and made it to Santo Domingo in 8 days. If you start in St. Jean you can make it to Logroño. I loved all these towns too. Day 1: Roncesvalles to Zubiri Day 2: Zubiri to Cizur Menor (I wanted to avoid Pamplona but you don't have to) Day 3: Cizur to Puente la...

Getting back to Madrid from small towns on the Camino Francé

For this my second Camino stage it looks like I will have to stop either in Carrión de los Condes or Terradillos de los Templarios--it doesn't look like I will have enough days to walk as far as León. Does anybody have reliable information on how to get back to Madrid from those places? My...

What is the one Albergue that you would say not to miss

Definitely the municipal albergue at Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Beautiful facilities, but above all, incredible treatment from the hospitaleros. Felt really welcomed.

Booking accomodation or do you just walk in

I walked the first 8 stages of the Camino Frances in July and thought reservations were not needed. No one was denied a bed. I made them in Zubiri at a private hostel and regretted it because the municipal was nicer. The albergue at Roncesvalles takes reservations if you wire them the money...
