LIVE from the Camino Challenging but worth it (Camino Sanabres Granja de Moreruela - Santiago, 8 - 20 April)

I have walked this route three times ( Seville to Santiago) and agree with you that the most memorable and enjoyable for me was the walk between A Guidina and Laza. We broke the walk into two stages by staying the night in the albergue at Campo...about the half way mark. Very pleasant albergue...

    Sanabres "Glitch"

I walked it in Sept 2022 and found the albergue open and very pleasant to stay in. In 2016 the albergue was not open, so I taxied the first 8KM, then walked to Laza, a very pleasant walk. I was 69 at the time, so no problem taking a taxi if circmstances warrant. The walk to Laza is one of...

Should I risk not booking in SJPDP and go for the refuge instead?

The night or nights you spend in SJPDP are important; you need to have a to get a good nights sleep, and some of the people you will meet will form the foundation of a walking group that you will see off and on from there to Santiago. I reserved with one of the privately run hostels, took the...

    Dinner time on the VDLP

You answered your own question in the first paragragh, flexibility is the key, and sometimes even picking up some food at a local store, ( and finding one that is open) is a challenge. One day in 2022 I arrived at the hosted in Rio Negro and found that the only restaurant/bar in town, ( which I...

    Celebrating my old age

Your message and outlook struck a chord with me....very similar to mine. I was 74 when I walked the VLDP again for the third time in 2022. Lead a reasonably healthy lifestyle, without being too radical, and you should have many more Caminos in your future. I am tentatively planning another...

Camino awesome, Santiago not so much

The area of Santiago around the Cathedral is very much a tourist trap...be prepared to pay a lot for very little. Last time we were there in 2018 we stayed away from the cathedral area, found a place about a km away in a commercial residential area...few tourists, mostly locals. Prices were...

Please don't treat donativos as free

It might be a good rule to donate the same amount you would expect to pay at an alberque that charges for accommodation and use of facilities such as a kitchen. The last time I did a Camino in 2018, I recall the average charge was 10E for bed and use of the kitchen. Seems to me giving a...

    Flight booked.

HI, I did the same walk starting at the same date in 2018, be prepared for some very hot weather the first week or so.....it was brutal from Seville to Guillena the first day. This time I will not wait for the free breakfast at the hotel but start much earlier in the morning!

    Flight booked.

HI and welcome! I just finished ( again) fooling around with British Airways and their repeated changes to my flights. Anyway, looks like I will be walking out of Seville on Sept 9th on the VLDP. I look forward to maybe seeing some of you along the way.

How long did VDLP Seville to Santiago take you

Take your time, plan some rest days. I have done the VLDP twice, and both times took close to 50 days....extra days in Caceres, Merida, Zafra, Salamanca, Ourense......all time well spent. Its not a race, its an experience...enjoy every moment of it....who knows when you will be back?

    How is Camino Sanabres ?

Having done the Sanabres route twice, in 2016 and 2018, and taking the Laza route and stopping in Lalin, I agree with Juans comments..an accurate account of that walk....arduous in parts but worth it.

Flying from Vancouver - better to fly Paris to Biarritz or take the train?

HI, I live in BC and have done the Frances twice. Both times I took KLM Vancouver to Amsterdam, and from there flew to Bayonne. Overnighted in Bayonne for two nights to get over the jet lag, then train ( or bus) up to SJDPP. Bayonne is an interesting little city, nice place to get...
