We ignored the so called 'Brierley' stages enjoying the small towns and villages. No trouble at all with accommodation. If one wants to meet people, they will appear. I often ranged ahead wanting...
Hiking poles would be a great addition.
They are beneficial in keeping one's body upright and taking pressure off the knees etc, etc.

Sad situation. For your knee, I recommend Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets. You will notice the difference after a couple of weeks. I am also 73, completing my Camino last year in September, taking 31 days.
Next year, the Camino del Norte awaits!
