I have the Speedgoat 3. I love them. I haven't walked long distances in them but bought them a half size larger.
I also use the ASICS Kahana trail runner.

However, what would you see as a solution of Pilgrims who have a sincere desire to do the Pilgrimage but are not able bodied enough to do so without some kind of assistance?
Don't be concerned with what people may or may not think. There will be people you will meet that are sending their bags ahead for various reasons.

I do have poles. I have had an IT band problem and don't want it again . It is very painful

It has been suggested to me to try Mueller's jumpers knee strap for under the knee to help with descents. Also, an illiotibial support band above the knee for IT problems.
Does anyone have experience using either type product?

I would say Camino neck / head protectors.
A quick search on Amazon showed the Buff brand but many said scarf, headwear.
If I go into a store in the US and asked for a buff, I will be shown different brands.
In my personal shopping experiences for shoes, I think the sales people are trained to believe boots are better for long hikes .When I have asked, why?
