I was 71 when I did el Frances, I was feeling competent and capable and it took me 41 days. I am nowhere near as capable as I was 4 years ago. I am amazed, Roamer, at what you are going to accomplish.
Take care and buen camino
We are planning for about 15 Km a day to start. We know that in the past, our bodies got better as the days went by so we may increase the distance as we go. My advantage is that I have Wonder Woman with me and she is a young 66 years old. She always takes good care of her old man. And yes...
After all this pep talk we are now committed. We bought the tickets. We leave for Porto on the 28th and then train to Fatima to spend a day there and finally a bus trip to Tomar. And then to walk!
This time only 500 km to see if the old guys's knee holds.
Portugal, here we come!
Thanks...
Thank you all, when I wrote the first entry I was thinking that there would be very few people my age walking. Your encouragement and advice really make a difference.
I really had been having doubts at going back but remembering the amazing experience, both spiritual and physical we had...
Indeed. The first night in Roncesvalles we spent the night in the old albergue. It was completely full and we did not sleep at all. That was the end of albergues for us. Since then we always used private rooms. We decided we cannot sleep with the young ones.
Also, we have kept our walks to...
In our CF we stopped for a morning at Atapuerca to visit the palaeontology site of the oldest European man. While waiting for our tour, I walked into a glass door at the reception centre. The door shattered. I got a bruce in my forhead and a sore knee but after the tour we walked another 20...
The accidents occurred in casual walks, just on normal daily activities. Like going for coffee or going to the supermarket.
And we do use poles in hikes and more formal walks, we have been using them for years and we would not dream of attempting the camino without them.
I am in my mid 70s, planning my fourth pilgrimage for October and for the first time worried about my capabilities.
Some background, my first pilgrimage at the age of seventy was just a test. My wife and I walked from Sarria in comfort, someone transported our luggage and pre-planned...
I did not read all the other replies.
I walked my first camino at 70 years of age, diabetic, overweight and I made it. The secret is don't be afraid, be flexible. It is on the job training, after the first couple of weeks even an old body like mine becomes a walking machine. Some days I...
El Camino was a blessing for us.
My wife of 43 years and I started two years ago by trying it and walking from Sarria.
That was enough for us to go back the next year and walk from Roncesvalles (the Napoleon pass was closed becasue of snow.
This year we walked El Camino Portugues from Lisboa.
We...
I walked el Camino Frances last March and April. I was 70 years old at the time. It was not easy but I was doable. I am sure you can do it. I am now planning el Camino Portuguese for next year.
Make sure you are rested from your trip and recovered from the jet lag and take it easy. Don't...
I want to tell you something but I don't know how. I had some marvellous moments, very emotional and spiritual. Mass at Burgos cathedral, Cruz de Ferro, O'Cebreiro, and at Santiago's cathedral.

Buen Camino

Wow, you really started a discussion with strong opinions. This comes to prove that everyone Camino is different.
Because of a bad leg and age my wife and I walk slower than most so we see pilgrims go by. Often we meet someone for only a day or a moment but nevertheless it has been...
I have just walked from Roncesvalles to Ponferrada and planning to go all the way to Santiago. If you are going to skip a part of the Camino I suggest you skip the meseta, Burgos to Leon. It is... uninteresting... Unending flats through farmer fields... Of course that is my personal opinion...
To go to Finisterre and Muxia there are many tours like this one: http://www.getyourguide.com/santiago-de-compostela-l153/1-day-tour-to-finisterre-costa-da-morte-from-santiago-t33470/ I am sure you can find more about then when you arrive to Santiago de Compostela. I am also sure you can find...
That's terrific. My wife and I are a few weeks behind you. We start early march in Roncesvalles. Pray for us when you get to the cathedral bof Santiago.
Burn Camino
With respect to Falcon's link, we are Canadian and we are traing in Ontario trails, I think that the winter conditions are more severe here than in Navarra. Still, we appreciate the warning. Abuelito (grandpa) will be careful.
Karen, we are seniors so we are giving ourselves 45 days for the pilgrimage. I am sure you will catch up with us, looking forward to meeting you somewhere along the camino
