    Camino Norte advice

I walked the Norte in April, May 2022 and found the route well marked for most of the way. I used a lot of the GR variants to stay close to the coast wherever possible and so I had to look out for their signs as well as the camino markers. I did stray a little off the route on the longer coastal...

They are Swaledale and Wensleydale, via Shunner Fell on the Pennine Way.

    For Interest

We have checkpoints every 5-9 miles with food and drink provided but most of us only sit down a few times. Restarting walking after you've sat down for a few minutes can be a bit uncomfortable at first, especially if I have a blister. As we have to pass through each checkpoint before a certain...

    For Interest

Hi, Yes I only saw this one but I was on a challenge walk with my walking club so I was following a fixed route that went on into the woods. As I'd come from the north east, I couldn't continue in the direction the arrow was facing which presumably, would have lead me south after that. I did say...

    For Interest

Looking on OS map 30, it's at the end of a footpath just before the entrance to the woods about 1/2 km east of Preston-under-scar. I had just come down from the Leyburn Shawl

    For Interest

I spotted this sign in the Yorkshire Dales in July. I don't know if I could have relied on finding enough signs to get me to the south coast ports though.

    VdlP April 2025

I've walked three different Spanish Camino's over the Easter period and to be honest, I don't remember any of the days being different to any other days of the week. I guess I was never in a big city over the holiday periods but I certainly didn't have any problems finding accommodation or food...

Anything you want for Camino but it doesn't seem to have been invented?

I'd like to see friendly dogs on the Spanish Camino's. They seemed to have been invented for use along the Portuguese Camino route but not on the Spanish ones; except for the extremely well trained and enormous sheep dogs, thankfully.

Fly out to Lisbon on Saturday!!

I walked from Lisbon at the end of September last year and I enjoyed my walk out of Lisbon. I didn't mind the short industrial area, in fact I found it interesting. Shortly after that there's the area where a world expo was held some years ago and I enjoyed that too. After that there's the new...

Camino del Norte: Irun - SDC, April-May 2025

I walked the Norte in April/May 2022 and despite rain being forecast just about every day, I seem to remember it only rained on five days, and only once for the whole day and that was in Galicia. It was definitely easier and dryer walking near the coast from Irun than people had on the Valcarlos...

    Washing clothes on CP

I usually wash my clothes every day by putting them on the shower floor and stomp on them as I shower. Then I rinse them in a sink with cold water. I dry them as best as I can in a towel afterwards because I have found that about 75% of the albergues I've used on the VdlP, Norte and Portuguese...

newcomer with questions about Le Puy-en Velay to Conques

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't expect them to cook anything especially for me though so I think it'd be safer if I just go without a shared meal but I will ask if I can cook some eggs though. I might bring a camping stove and frying pan with me, if I have enough room.

newcomer with questions about Le Puy-en Velay to Conques

I get that but I don't eat vegetables so I don't want to be rude and refuse to eat them in front of the host. I've had very few communal meals on my previous caminos but I do remember some of them were vegetarian meals. So should I tell the host when I make the booking? That's why I was...

newcomer with questions about Le Puy-en Velay to Conques

This Camino is on my bucket list so I have a question regarding the communal meal. I don't eat carbs, so no pasta, vegetables, bread, fruit etc. Presuming that a French host would normally include some of these items in their meal plan, would it be rude of me to decline them or should I mention...

By choice or dealing with the unexpected: how to sleep outside???

I had to sleep outside on my second night on the VdlP last year. I arrived at the first albergue after just 19 Kms and as it wasn't due to open for another 2.5 hours, I decided to carry on for another 28kms to the next village with an albergue. Unfortunately, both of these were full so I thought...

    Drink water to keep hydrated

On my first Camino, I always kept my water in a pouch at my side so that I could reach it easily. I was in a small family of walkers and noticed that the young woman amongst us hardly ever drank. She said it was because she couldn't reach it without taking her backpack off so couldn't be...

On the Norte and want to avoid the Frances until last possible moment into SdC

That's what I'm planning on doing, the next time I'm on the Norte. I'll continue along the coast on the Ruta Del Mar (?) until Ferrol and then follow the Ingles. When I last did the Norte, 2 years ago, I only spoke to a few pilgrims during the evening as all the municipal albergues were closed...

    Another footwear question

You will be walking on cobbled paths and roads virtually every day for at least the first three weeks. I wore lightweight walking boots with cushioned insoles but a couple of days south of Porto I developed a blister under my forefoot. I stayed at the nursing home the night before Porto with 7...

    Your most valuable stamp

My favourite stamp wasn't an actual stamp, just a handwritten sentence stating the name of the bar, it's location and the date. Last year I walked the VdlP and Sanabres and after the last stop before SdC, I veered off route and headed west. It was my intention to bypass Santiago and head to the...
