Vegetarian Camino - a real sacrifice

Many thanks @Rebekah Scott and all the many other posters. The OP lost me with: Whereas Laurie @peregrina2000 doesn't want to sound snarky, I will. Really? It sounds as if you ate quite a bit, albeit not according to your wishes or expectations. Believe me, being a vegetarian on a Camino is way...

    Improve the pilgrim experience

I'll admit that I haven't yet looked at the questionnaire but why in the world would someone feel threatened? And "improve" my experience? Oh my, what is there to improve and how? Each pilgrimage is different, not better or worse but different. As one says "it is what it is". I personally feel...

How many days off did you take on the CF?

None, neither walking the Francés from SJPdP twice (20 and 19 days) nor on any other Camino route. I am fortunate to recover fast and have never felt the need. A couple of times I've walked a stage of about 18 km in order to visit a city, otherwise I like to arrive at my destination at about 2...

Very simple app or gps to just know your speed

Most people can increase or decrease their speed, that's obvious, but in my experience there is a "sweet" pace which one can walk for hours on end without too much effort. I may be an exception but on a Camino my pace always averaged out to be the same, 5.5 kph even on mountainous routes, this...

Very simple app or gps to just know your speed

Just a heads-up regarding smartwatches - not all are created equal. For years I had a Fitbit and not the cheapest model, but it way underestimated the distance walked. In 2022 when I rewalked the Norte at the end of the day I would check my numbers with a fellow pilgrim who had a top of the line...

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

That's a really good point and you will only know once you have been in one spot for a few months. In the beginning everything is new and exciting, that wears off after a while. I have several friends living permanently in Ponferrada (American and Dutch) who were extremely welcoming when I...

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

Understand. My situation was quite different. The albergue - it was an albergue turístico - was treated yearly for pesky critters, that was a health regulation which was strictly followed and one of the previous owners who did the original renovations was an architect so I assumed (maybe not...

Taking the Invierno off the road

No idea, you may (or not) be right.

    Buying an Apartment in Spain?

An Irish/EU passport should do it, at least I had no problem with a Dutch passport and the steps were very simple compared to The Netherlands. Maybe it was simpler for me since I bought an albergue from another EU citizen who explained the process. I had no lawyer or real estate agent, only a...

Walked the Camino over 12 times to Santiago never once went into Cathedral.

Going to the pilgrim's mass, giving a hug and thanks to Santiago and getting a Compostela are an integral part of my Caminos. Those rituals have meaning to me. Am I Catholic or even religious? Definitely not, but arriving in Santiago even after 16 or 17 (?) times still moves me and I can't...

Taking the Invierno off the road

So terribly sad to see. Take a Camino stage off the shoulder of a highway yes, but please don't "improve" dirt paths through forests and farmland. That picture @unadara says it all 😠. That huge some of money could be much better allocated and actually benefit the pilgrim and local population...

    New pilgrim albergue in Zalla

Heard about the opening on the Camino Olvidado Facebook page a while back but didn't think to post the info here. Good you have Laurie. I see that it has an affiliation with the Christan albergue in Villamayor de Monjardín and the one near Lugo El Fuente del Peregrino neither of which I've...

VDLP - Too late in the year ?

Climate can vary from year to year but I've done the Plata in the summer, fall and winter. What is too late? In the winter a few municipal albergues were closed but there was always an economical alternative. Fall was wonderful and we were lucky with little rain, even in Galicia.

Stage 3 Via de la Plata help

I've walked that section of the Plata three times and always walked from Castilblanco to Almadén. Leaving early morning there are few to no cars and your reward is the turnoff into the park (and a nice steep climb before entering Almadén). From what I understand there is now a path alongside...

Grañon, Grañon, oh my dear Grañon again.

Lucky you! Grañón is my all time favorite albergue as both a pilgrim and a volunteer hospitalera 💜 If if they would ever accept dogs U would volunteer there again in a flash!

Food on La Meseta beyond abysmal

Luckily I speak Spanish😉 And have learned that the Spanish (in general) don't consider ham or tuna meat.

Thirty five days and I never knowingly encountered another diabetic

The imagine of a roller coaster ride resonates with me. My mother was a type 1 "brittle" diabetic as she called it. It was a battle to keep her numbers under control but in her case a coke did the job, something she always had with her. It is no laughing matter and the consequences can be...

    Backpack transport on Camino Olvidado

I walked the Olvidado summer 2023 and definately agree on all the comments in Laurie's post.

Food on La Meseta beyond abysmal

I'm vegan so my protein source on the Camino is basically the same as that at home - chick peas and lentils. Add to that some vegetables and maybe a carb source such rice or pasta (which I usually don't eat since beans also are a source of carbs) and you have a well balanced meal. If you don't...

    Albergue in Canfranc is closed

The early closing has nothing to do with this issue, let's not jump to conclusions. Due to dangerous weather conditions the Camino became impassible.
