    First time Camino advice??

Bring pair of walking shoes and lightweight flipflops / sandals for shower. I prefer sandals (Teva), they're not as bulky than Crocs and waterproof, too.

    Albergues in Porto (early June)

It depends. I booked ahead last year in the Albergue de Porto. Very nice, very helpful and professional. Nice garden and kitchen. They offer a warm welcome, Credential and first stamp, good wishes and helpful info. You will need an hour in total from airport to the city center via the tram. If...

Is 5 days in Finisterre a bad idea?

Sad to say, I didn't keep my ticket. But there are some Agencies that offer that trip, almost all to the same price, I paid 45€ last year for the 8hrs. trip.

Is 5 days in Finisterre a bad idea?

I've booked a roundtrip SdC - Finisterre - Muxia - SdC last year after I finished my CP. Quite a nice experience. Very nice guide, clean bus. We were ~20 people and had ~1-1,5h time at every stop. In Finisterre we had lunch after sightseeing. It was ok for me, but I had plans for 3 rest days in...

    Medication woes

Almost the same here. The security did take a look at Frankfurt airport in the travel-prescription I got from my professional and waved through. 2019 on CF w/o any medication (bandaids only), 2023 on the CP with supplies of Ass100 (Aspirin), Metoprolol, HCT, Ramipril, Ezitimib-Rosuvastatin. For...

Pacemaker Implant Surgery Tomorrow. A New Phase for Future Caminos.

Get well soon. And keep that attitude! After my severe heart-attack in March 2022 (with Stents, Rehab and co.) I felt much rejuvenated that I made a voyage to the Provence in August 2022 and walked the CP in July 2023. All is possible, if you take some minor precautions.

    Help! Can't find a bed in Santiago, May 17 and 18, 2024

Monte de Gozo is not that far. If you want to stay reasonable in prize, try to talk to the staff at Albergue km0, they did help me last year and organized a bed in a local Inn near the cathedral. It was ~35€ per night. SdC was packed with young pilgrims July 2023, the Catholic Juvenile...

How to get rid of bed bugs from silk and merino items?

Same, maybe shorten the freezing to 24h by making a rest-day?
  9. Roland49

How to get rid of bed bugs from silk and merino items?

Sensitive items could be freezed for 48h. Put it in a ziplok, throw it in freezer and let it freeze for 48h. Wash it after that by hand or machine (wool programm, if possible). If you want, use an anti-bedbug detargent.

Breaking Up the Walk from Porto to Vila do Conde

In July 2023 I walked from the Albergue in Porto via the Cathedral and the river banks of the Douro up to Vila do Conde. It was a nice and easy start of the pilgrimage. Nothing booked, but slept on a mat on the floor in VdC. All other places filled, so many pilgrims walked on to Povoa.

    Definition of a Pilgrim 🤣

That's the part, that is depicting me. A bumpack for 10€ and good boots (200€) was all I bought for my first Camino in 2019. All the other equipment I owned already, most of it for years. With expenses averaging 23€ per day I call it "Pilgrim on a budget". 😂

    Roncesvalles or Burguete?

Did I got so lucky? Maybe yes, the waiter that served us, told us that they got a new chef a few weeks before. The meals were excellent, not outstanding, but excellent. In fact I did eat in my life far more expensive and far less good than in Roncesvalles. We sat at a round table, 10 person, 7...

what Camera option are people using

I do own the first version of the Cotton Carrier and used it first for traversing the Alps. Really useful, easy in handling, nice weight-distribution, even with heavier gear. I wear it under the belts of the Rucksack and it never felt uncomfortable. For the CP I bought a CaptureClip from...

    Roncesvalles or Burguete?

just my 2 cents: if you never been to Roncesvalles: do it! Experience it! I walked the CF in 2019 and I do think that i had missed something, if I didn't stayed there. Exceptional Mass, exceptional meal at the Hotel (you will be asked by the Hospitaleros).

    Sundays and public holidays

It depends. If you are in a more touristical area, they have open. On 25th of July 2019 (Day of Santiago) there were only two small tiendas open in Palas de Rei. No Restaurant, no other shop open. It's a massive holiday in Galicia, I don't know how it's handled for Pentecost, but I assume that...

Is it okay to have no plan for the first Camino? 🌙

Long answer short: yes, it is! No plan and no expectations are really helpful.

    Pilgrimage - selfish?

Yip, for shure! btw: ditto! That's why I used it in that specific topic. That, in facts, counts too for the word "flexing". Boosting your confidence or your selfawareness has really nothing to do with an Ego-boost. I use language very literally: Ego(-maniacs) don't care about their (social)...

    Pilgrimage - selfish?

Oh, I talk. Simple as that. And if s/b flexes about his "speed", I couldn't care less!
  19. Roland49

    Pilgrimage - selfish?

Having done the CF in 2019 and the CP in 2023 I can say that there are more and more people out there seeking an ego-boost or because it's a thing "someone should do". Both pilgrimages that I've done out of thankfulness and seeking myself while meeting many people that have many exceptional...

    Route planning- Help!

Out of my personal opinion I would stay in Barcelona until the 24th (maybe visit Tarragona, Montserrat, Girona???). Take the train, stay in Madrid (sightseeing, Museums, etc. ) until your concert, take a bus / train to Valladolid and walk the Camino de Madrid from there via Sahagun and the...
