Start where we are or walk the extra distance to the edge of Irún?

My Cicerone guide actually lets the Norte start at Irun bus / train station. I think I understand where your idea about the 'outer edge of Irun' may have come from, because The Santiago bridge / river crossing to France is also often referred to a starting point, and it is on the edge of the city.

Start where we are or walk the extra distance to the edge of Irún?

There is no such thing as an official start... Feeling sympathy though, I remember getting lost on my first day of my Norte as well, for some reason it took me 2 hours to find my way out of Irun town centre - I really have no idea what went wrong. (and after that I never got lost again). But...

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

I don't doubt this. I am quite sure they would not hold up under scrutiny

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

Good points. In fact, I always like to compare forum chat with actual research. Fwiw. According to the 2024 World Happiness Report 2024, the USA is nr 23 on the ranking of world happiest countries (6.7 on average) and Spain as nr 36 (6.4). The world happiest country, of course, remains Finland.

    Bjørn Krohn

Maybe some forum members (now on the camino) have met him, which may be helpfull for his wife and family, which is why I copy this message (from a facebook group) here. RIP. Last week on Monday 15 April, Bjørn Krohn, a Danish priest checked into the parochial albergue at La Faba, the one run by...

Growing numbers on the Camino Portugues - newspaper article

Maybe on the CP people stay more often in private accomodation instead of albergues. I do not know for a fact, but is an impression I have. See also this quote from the article that the CP attracts many more high-net-worth pilgrims come with tourist packages that organize everything for them

    Mojones in Germany

I asked myself the same question  It refers to Alpha and Omega. A is for Alpha (the beginning, where I come from) and O for Omega (the ending, showing pilgrims the direction). For some more information about the waymarkers of the Eichswalder Jakobsweg, see also...

    Mojones in Germany

I think I saw it as well. Near Elten, while walking the Nordrheinische Jakobsweg to Koln. Which is on the way to Santiago. :)

When you know they get it….

It was initiated by a woman who walked the Sachsischen Jakobsweg. See also: https://www.ekmd.de/presse/pressestelle-erfurt/einmalig-am-lutherweg-pilgerstation-am-privaten-haus.html

From my doorstep in Germany - a (very!) long term project

Good to see you have continued the journey. How far do you plan to walk ? Hof ? Nurnberg ? Anyway, I am following with interest. Guten Weg !

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

No wonder these numbers (which are relatively favorable about the carbon footprint of travelling by plane) were hard to find. They are not in line with other sources that are based on scientific research, and which are very easy to find actually. Please - and as was made clear in post #2 - if...

    Via Regia in Germany

As far as I know there is no listing of all accomodation on the internet. The PDF mentioned contains updates to the guidebook, but it is not a full list of all accomodation. I walked with a guidebook and without a smartphone (just a simple mobile phone). The jakobswege-deutschland website has a...

    Via Regia in Germany

Hello @NickyWalking The excellent post by SYates from 2016 is still very usefull today, there have only been some changes in the accomodation (some Herbergen do not exist anymore, and there are some new ones) but the route description is still more or less valid (no major changes). I walked...

Der ÖkumenischePilgerweg - Via Regia - in Germany

Thank you for posting. It reflects the Via Regia very well I think & and it brings back good memories. I walked it last year, for a second time actually, that's how much I liked it. May consider a third time, to try the alternative routes you mention ;)

Nuremberg - Santiago - Finisterra -Starting the end of April 2024

Small typo ;) This is the correct link. https://www.pilgerunterkunft.de/ I agree that in general pilgrim accomodation can be sparse in Germany. On the other hand, last year I walked app. 1000 km in Germany (from Swinemunde to Hamburg on the Via Baltica, and from Gorlitz to Marburg on the Via...

    Carry your backpack please.

Please stay on the forum as I enjoy reading your posts, including the one on this thread. Apparently it caused offence to someone, but to me (and I think for most others) it was absolutely clear that causing offence was not the aim of your post. It is not your fault when someone feels offended...

    Via Coriovallum (the Netherlands)

Thanks for the link. I had never heard of it, but it is on my to do list now. :)

    What does "good shoes" mean?

Good shoes are shoes that you feel comfortable walking in, no need to further complicate matters. It actually seems you answered your own question. Who cares whether they are 'too much shoe' for the Camino Frances ? If you feel comfortable using them, use them on the camino too. (Btw I always...

From my doorstep in Germany - a (very!) long term project

And there you go ;) It is not complete, but a starting point. (eg for Via Regia and Via Baltica you have to buy the guidebook to get all pilgrim accomodations), but maybe it is usefull for the route you intend to walk. https://www.pilgerunterkunft.de/

Are you a hiker or a walker?

I guess I am a walker. For the simple reason there are no hiking trails where I live. Fwiw. The words walker and hiker do no translate well in my language. In Dutch, lopen refers to the physical act of putting one foot in front of the other. Wandelen means : lopen for leisure purpose. We have...
