Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

Be prepared for rain. I've been on the Norte twice in June and it was wet. I had better weather in October. The coastline is known for its fickle weather. As far as accommodations is concerned, I've never had a problem but the last time I was on it was June 2022. Here in The Netherlands the...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 11.0

Navarette to Najera, Day 50, Via Podiensis/Camino Frances, 1st, June, 2024. Cooler and windier today, unusual weather for summer in Spain. Shorter walk today through many vineyards and great views of the surrounding mountains.

    Mid March Planning Head Aches

The Napoleon route is definitely closed in March. April 1st is the earliest date it is open, depending on the weather.

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

I couldn't agree more, and look forward to reading the screenshots of your book when back on pc. The Camino needs preserving both the good bits and the bad bits, it was never meant to be a walk along a perfectly tarmacked track. It's different if a section becomes practically impassible and...

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

...of you would like to read it. I'm not sure if you will buy into my advocacy for this section. The only time I've seen it was in good weather, and I wheeled my loaded bike down the track with no problem, because I was very careful. Perhaps a large warning sign to discourage people...

Which Camino and which stages for our first Camino

...of the last 100kms would suit but we don’t need to end in Santiago, have also looked at San Sebastian to Bilbao. We live in Scotland so would like some warm weather for a change 😂. Would very much appreciate advice and pros and cons between options. Looking forward to our first Camino...

    Mid March Planning Head Aches

Not to mention that past weather trends are all but worthless in our new warming world.

    Too hot in August?

Ah here is one of the articles I read, quote: "Indeed, a study by dermatologists at Emory University in Atlanta found that standard rain umbrellas can block at least 77 percent of UV light [Source: JAMA Dermatology]. Black ones did the job especially well, blocking about 90 percent of UV rays...

    Mid March Planning Head Aches

I think that this is not a very charitable response. There is more than weather that goes into determining what is needed. And many people, either unfamiliar with long walks or familiar with different kinds of long walks, do not know at the outset what they will need. That's why they come to...

    Too hot in August?

...don't remember where I saw this. Just that the research was done in Australia. My plan is to just pick up a plain old umbrella as soon as the weather requires it. One less thing to carry around, if I don't need it. I did however buy a little handsfree umbrella holder on Garage Grown Gear. It...

    Mid March Planning Head Aches

...I bought some rain pants from Decathlon one year for 10 euro, and, like my sleeveless puffa jacket from a China store for another 10 euro, they are some of the best things I ever bought on the camino. I never take rain pants Apr to Oct. But in very cold weather they are fantastic for warmth.

    Mid March Planning Head Aches

...Rain pants for me are pretty pointless, you will overheat and still get wet, especially your feet. Top-half is the most important part to plan for in that scenario. I'm not a poncho fan but that and layers will do the job, just make sure it's a decent poncho able to deal with any weather and...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 11.0

Viana to Navarette, Day 49, Via Podiensis/Camino Frances, 31st, May, 2024. Cooler, cloudier day today but fine weather for walking. We didn’t linger on Logrono but it seemed to take a long time to get through it! The beautiful St James Way Rose on the outskirts of Logrono.

Too much. Bring a wool sweater, medium to light weight and a thin rain coat. If it gets cold, wear both. Two pairs of pants is plenty. Honestly, I usually wear shorts if it’s in the upper 30sF. A thin pair of gloves might be useful in the morning on a few days.

...find out is when you get to SJPdP's, inquire with the Pilgrims Office. They can tell you more precisely the conditions up the unpredictable weather up the Pyrennes. If that's the case, you might have to walk via Valcarlos' paved and maintained roads to Roncesvalles. When I walked up the...

Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

Hi @Pegstar, welcome to the forum. You are asking a couple of the great un-answerables but I do understand why you're asking. https://www.gronze.com/etapa/santander/santillana-mar is probably the best resource for accommodation information and does specify which are bookable and which are not...

Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

...so I could switch on to the Camino Primativo if that might be safer accommodation-wise (just love that section of coast - UK is horrendous weather at the moment and it would be wonderful to have a dip after a long day walking) and weirdly don't want to finish in Santiago as I'd like to come...

Mid-April to mid-May Camino Francés, my experiences, insights, mistakes and lessons

I just completed my first Camino on the Camino Frances. I am one of those who started at Sarria (I also walked on to Finisterre). I did this walk partially with my daughter and partially solo, after a knee surgery, and suffering from arthritis and another ongoing health issue. I walked what I...
