I read this book (finished it) and it planted in my mind the question…. Could I walk 800 km along a road trod by thousands before me in search of… (struggling as a lapsed catholic)
About 5 years later, at a juncture in my life when decisions had to be made, I said to myself…why not walk the...
Once upon a time…came across a vending machine in the early in the morning in Cizur Minor in 2018 (last Camino Frances… too busy after that one). It had a can of what we Aussies would call a flat white, and once ‘popped’ it was hot! The perfect amount of caffeine required to get going… now in...
Ohh I love to float! I’m a regular user of float tanks here in Brisbane for relaxation, athletes used to use them for recovery, although the hyperbaric chamber has taken over in recent years (and ice baths). A 90 minute float is like having 8 hours sleep apparently…. You are more likely to...
Depends on your arrival time and what you need to do before you leave… I flew in from Australia, if you arrive earlish in the morning, stay in Sacavém, train into Lisbon, go to the cathederal for a stamp and walk back… the next day (depending where you walk to) is a little shorter. I added in...
Fully agree! Also the cost of doing anything in Aus is huge! 6 day walking with bed, meals on the Great Ocean Road quote for a single $4500... self managed and taxis still $2700 ish, despite the airfares, those dollars go a long way in Spain... I'm up to about 8, 2 each the last 2 years others...
Altras have gaiters for their shoes, they velcro on... worn them on various types of Altras over my last 5 caminos, light weight stretchy fabric. My uncle and aunt walked with 'gardener' gaiters on the Frances 5 years ago... lots of stops and comments from peopleon how good an idea. $10 in...
Male walking companions swear by ex-officio boxers, long leg, I too have bought them and worn them on caminos for the longer leg (the women's version only has 'boy leg' -
too short), I've also worn for a few caminos now a couple of pair of Aldi men's technical boxers... very good as well.
I wore Olympus 5 Lisbon to Valença then Ferrol to SDC in April/May. I was very appreciative of the extra cushioning on the cobblestone and asphalt through Portugal. I’ve worn Loan Peak on various Francés and Portuguese Costal x2 and Timps on the Via De la Plata. Olympus has my vote. I have a...
I’ve packed up and taken the disposable sheet and pillowcase to the next Albergue that I had read didn’t supply them… i was the envy of room in the muni in Ponte de Lima in April….
Any idea if there is a post office at Barcelona airport? I can fly into there instead of Madrid from Brisbane. The website says there is one but other web searches say only post boxes….
Try a rain skirt (folds to size of average woman's fist) and poncho.... light rain..use the skirt as a cape (worked well for me on the VDLP in May this year), heavier rain add a good poncho (I used the Altus) on top and skirt as skirt. Easy to change around combination as heaviness of rain...
There were Ausdies this year on the VDLP, I was one of them walking late April May.... I knew of others as well... you must have just missed us all! It was wonderful walking that time of year.
Finished the VDP on Ascencion... went to Caminha and walked across to Tui via river, saw 3 pilgrims that day... Tui, heaps of pilgrims, I went via the Espiritual and had to book ahead to stay in the albergue, monestary full (friends couldn't get a bed a couple of days later as they hadn't...
I found significant wear in the inside heel after about 250 km (an engo patch helped on the next pair purchase) and sole/tried wear at about 700 km. So... by the end of the Francés they were done, became shoes I mowed the lawn in. I have Olympus now, trialing before upcoming VDLP....they are...
