    Toilet tissue littering Camino Portugués

So you think that the locals sneak out at night to dump their toilet paper (and no other trash) alongside the Caminos, but not too near their own homes, which by your logic they want to keep clean? Not sure I buy that. I'm going with blaming thoughtless and selfish pilgrims.

    Washing clothes on CP

Plan on washing your clothing yourself. Almost everywhere has clotheslines, and for where there's not, you can buy a compact, lightweight braided clothesline where you loop the ends around something handy, and tuck your clothes up into the braided rubbery/elastic line without needing clothespins.

Small (4-5 kg which is about 10 pounds) dog -- should I bring her?

I wouldn't. I was very bonded to my dog too when I did the Camino, but it didn't cross my mind to try to bring her along. Food, lodging, transportation, cleaning up after the dog (don't even think about leaving piles anywhere, including your own!) would just totally detract from it, and would...

Forum-sourced ideas for an optimal reus(e)able bed sheet, please

Silk sleeping bag liner. Super warm, and extremely compact and lightweight. Sorry, can't think of another use for it!

    Coffee

I do something similar while camping. Granted, every extra gram you're carrying is an issue, but I make a mixture of powdered milk, cinnamon, cayenne, cocoa, and a good quality powdered coffee (like Via), and have a mixture to just add hot water to, and I had something resembling a Mexican...

    Toilet paper on the camino

Hear, hear!!! We pick up after our dogs on walks all the time - just pack a bunch of poop bags, and be a respectful visitor to those beautiful countries!

    Crinkly Plastic Bags

I lined my pack with a plastic bag to keep bed bugs from getting in. I had no idea how noisy it would be until I was using it. And then I did what you did, carrying the entire pack outside the dorm room as quietly as possible, so I wouldn't make crinkling noises right around people trying to...

    Toilet paper on the camino

Bring dog poop bags with you - super lightweight and inexpensive or free. Then dispose appropriately. I agree, it was disgusting and sad to see such lack of respect for our hosts.

Easy ways to share Camino updates with family?

I did that, so every day I'd just do a "reply all" w/o quoting previous content, and attaching 1-3 photo collages, so they'd transmit easier, showing scenes from my day. I'd strongly consider a WhatsApp group now, although not everyone has that (more universal o/s the US, in my experience, but...

    Wake up alarm

Only one time while I was hiking the camino did a fellow pilgrim put an alarm on full volume blast (Earlier than anyone else was getting up). Very rude. Agree with the vibrate recommendations

How many days walking from Porto to Santiago?

I'd say 8-10 days, depending on your walking speed and whether you take the variante espiritual including the boat up the Río Ulla (highly recommended). I flew from the US to Madrid, and from there to Porto - another option to look at. Bom caminho!

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

David expressed it better than I could. I fully agree. I never listen to anything while hiking anywhere, to remain present and open to my surroundings and the experience of hiking.

Pilgrim Menus - what are your favourite items?

Being surprised. Tried (and liked!) stuff I wasn't familiar with. Nice to release control and just take what they give you!

What is the nicest thing that anyone has said to you on the camino?

What comes to mind for me is communication by actions, not words. As I was starting the Português, a grizzled old man came up to me and, assuming I didn't speak Portuguese, gestured walking with his fingers as a question. I told him yes I was a pilgrim, at which point he grabbed me and kissed my...

    Le Puy to Santiago 2021

I've hoped to attend an intensive French school near Le Puy for about a week, then hike for a while (not all the way to Santiago due to time constraints); moved from pre-planning to dreaming due to the pandemic. My French is already pretty good, but I'd like to get better. Are there schools...

    Snoring

If your friend wouldn't take offense at the request, there are strips you can put in your mouth that look a lot like the Listerine fresh breath strips, but they do something to reduce snoring. I think they work OK, but perhaps not for really loud cases. If your friend's in denial or is...

How to 'check in' without interrupting your camino?

I had a group to whom I would send a brief email every night including a montage of two to four pictures I had taken. Kept my family calm and took little time and was a good reflection on the day for me.

Have you practiced, or received a random act of kindness on your pilgrimage?

I tried to do the V.E. off stages, and found myself tired in a town with no accommodations. A man offered me a ride to the next town up (Vilanova) that did have public accommodations. A group of us were leaving Tui in the dark, and a man stopped his car to tell us the route had actually...
