In September 2024 was there a bed crunch on the non Frances Caminos?

My partner walked the Primitivo in early September this year. There was definitely a bed crunch in Berducedo/ La Mesa, with people coming off the Hospitales and finding they had to take a taxi at the end to get a bed for the night. (I remember that in June 2019 Berducedo was full too - I had to...

    Birding on the Camino Madrid

Just in case anyone needs acquainting with the song of the Great Bustard, or just needs cheering up on a dreary day, I recommend this informative video.

Le Puy to Conques, sleeping bag /bed bugs

In my experience walking the GR65 from Le Puy to Conques in May this year, I found they were taking the problem of bed bugs seriously. In most places you can't take your rucksack into the dormitory - instead, you put the belongings you need in a plastic box, and your rucksack stays downstairs in...

Remains of Bishop Teodomiro identified by archaeologists?

If you'd like to read the full academic article, here it is - it's on open access. Lots of really interesting stuff on how they reached their conclusions through different forms of scientific analysis...

How to get out of Conques on Via Podiensis

If you're on Facebook, join the GR65 Via Podiensis group. It's a goldmine of information from very knowledgeable folk. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1081800999284335

Okay, which one of you did this?

It's the Hindu Om (or Aum) symbol - I think this bench is designed to be multi-faith! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Om

Okay, which one of you did this?

Nice Hafiz quote, though it would it have been easier to just carve 'Take rest you must'.

    Con Niños!

I think @KJFSophie 's suggestion is a good one. Portugués works well with kids (we took ours on the coastal from Vigo with the variante espiritual and enjoyed it. There are quite a few threads on here about people's experiences walking with kids, so it's worth searching a bit. Here's one. All...

Finally - real food in Santiago!!!

This thread reminds me of the old joke about the tourist in Pamplona who goes to a celebrated restaurant after a bullfight, hoping to get their famous dish: bull cojones. He sees it on the menu, orders the dish and waits for a while. Eventually, the waiter flamboyantly presents him with a dish...

West Highland Way or Arran Coastal Way or ???

Fife Coastal path is beautiful! Another route worth considering is the Whithorn Way from Glasgow down through lovely Dumfries and Galloway. They have a pilgrim's passport and stamps, and the story of St Ninian is a special one. It's a newish route so you'll have lots of solitude...

One week and I start in Le Puy en Valey

I'd definitely recommend booking a few days ahead. The GR65 will be busy at this time of year, at least from Le Puys to Conques. I'm travelling to Le Puy next Wednesday and have booked ahead. If you're on Facebook, I strongly recommend the group 'GR65 Via Podiensis : walking the Le Puy route in...

Travel options from south Hampton to Ferrol/a Coruna

What a lovely idea to do it by ferry. Travelling as a foot passenger, you'll have a much lower carbon footprint than by plane as well. Sure, the ferry is more expensive but no need for airport transfers, and you get to see the sea. I'd love to hear how you get on. You've inspired me!

    Estrella Galicia merch in Santiago

If you know anything about the history of pilgrimage, you'll know that pilgrims always, always bought souvenirs along the way - and they certainly weren't all pious ones...

    Estrella Galicia merch in Santiago

Yes, Nikis is your best bet. When I was walking the Portugués, I was once served a beer in an Estrella Galicia glass with a 'La Casa de Papel'/ 'Money Heist' design. Never have I wanted to nick a beer glass more. Luckily my lightweight rucksack was my conscience...

St Michael's Way, Cornwall - article from The Guardian

Nice article! Here are a couple of pictures from my day walking it last June. I bivvied outside St Ives and started there - where there is an easy-to-find holy well called Venton Ia, dedicated to St Ia and just by the beach.

Crazy things people do in the last 100 km

I walked the last few km into Santiago barefoot both times. It was nicely refreshing on the feet.

What to read on the Voie du Puy?

On the same tack, if you like detective fiction I'd recommend Fred Vargas' quirky, archaeology-and-myth-based Inspector Adamsberg series. They are set all round France and Adamsberg himself is based in Paris, but comes from the Pyrenees. 'Seeking Whom he May Devour' is set there. They're terrific.
