Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Privat d’Allier in one day?

I walked the Frances last year and found the descents to be more problematic than the ascents. Wondering what the trail conditions are like on the descent to Monistrol under normal conditions? Also, wondering if there are on other problematic descents on the Le Puy to be aware of? Thanks!

Should we give recommendations on the forum?

Haha. Yes, those first 8 km were a reality check. I remember thinking that I'd heard that everyone cries at some point on the Camino, but on the first day????

    Checking your backpack on flights

If you do happen to pack your poles in an odd shaped cylinder be sure to look for them at the "errant luggage" counter at CDG rather than waiting an hour or so at the luggage carousel. ;-)

    Flies. Just sayin…

Good advice, actually. Random food flies are to be expected when communing with nature. However there was a forested section before reaching San Juan de Ortega where the face flies were really quite aggressive little buggers and a lightweight head net would have come in handy!

    Hiking poles vs staff

"but the majority of the Frances is easy walking." Except when it is not. We need to portray an accurate picture of the Camino for those planning their first trek. There are several descents that can be somewhat treacherous for those less nimble on their feet. It was on these, many with loose...

    Changing flights at CDG Paris

There are sites on the internet complete with maps and videos for navigating CDG. There will be photos of the actual signs in the terminals, which of course are mainly in French. These proved to be very helpful last year for this solo traveler.

Roncesvalles and Mansilla seem to be the bed crunch trouble spots

Upon arriving on Thursday, 9/1/2022, I had a very warm and welcoming reception from the volunteer at the monastery in Roncesvalles. My group was delayed due to a gentleman who had experienced heart issues in the Pyrenees. The volunteer escorted me to my bed/showers and then assured me that she...

    Northern lights!

You will have good luck in Iceland. You may have to set your alarm for the middle of the night, however! Haha! I was texting my husband at the time wingeing about being 65yo and being in the nosebleed bunk. Once I looked out the window I realized that it all was worth it!

    Northern lights!

Sorry to post photos just now. Still getting my bearings on the Camino.

    Northern lights!

Photos don’t do justice. The lights shimmer and fade in and out. See that bright spot? There was no moon visible at the time!

    Northern lights!

From my top bunk in Torres del Rio last night I looked out the window to see the Northern lights! My husband says they are predicted for the next week or so. He hasn’t seen them in Michigan yet. Imagine coming to Spain to see the Northern lights. Magical.

    Suddenly feeling terrified

I was in your shoes a week ago. I found that the fear becomes excitement and then suddenly back to fear again. Getting on the flight was a sense of accomplishment having finally packed and all so we were back to excitement. Landing In Paris sends one into survival mode so no room for fear there...

LIVE from the Camino Walking from Le Puy - after a rocky (anxious) start!

Hang in there, my friend. You will gain some momentum and courage with each passing day. As I wait to board my flight to Paris, I am trying to “cherish” that uneasy, uncertain ball of fear in my stomach as per Plato. Certainly that illustrious philosopher must know what he is talking about!

Walking time from SJPP to Borda

I've been in touch with the "Visit Bayonne" folks. I have a sense they are the equivalent of the city's chamber of commerce. I inquired if it would be best to call ahead for a taxi via the phone number provided. They replied that I could contact the company in the morning of the day in question...

Walking time from SJPP to Borda

Very kind of you to offer your advice. I have 3 hours as a comfortable ball-park ascent time. I am fairly fit. It is difficult to gauge the real-time situation from across an ocean! I am honored by the support of folks on this forum. Our traveling concerns give greater appreciation for those...

Walking time from SJPP to Borda

I contacted "Visit Bayonne" and they confirmed that there are no mid-day trains or buses to STJPP. They gave me this number for a taxi service: (+33) 05 59 59 48 48. ua1907, If you ned a ride share on 8/31 let me know!

Walking time from SJPP to Borda

Thanks, everyone, for all of your wonderful suggestions and advice. I made TGV and Auberge Borda bookings late spring when there was a mid-day TER departure from Bayonne, which they have since discontinued.... Ah, yes. We can chalk this up to the "best laid plans" of limited creatures. I will...
