? restarting my Via Francigena from eastern France

Hi Alwyn - I hope it opens up for 2022 - I have a feeling it will because of increasing vaccination rates. I've watched some hardy individuals walk the VF through COVID and it worked out for them (give or take the odd 40+ km hikes due to accommodation issues). I think be ready to go and if it...

    A Via Francigena Wave in 2022 ?

I understand your concern - on the news there seems to be a lot of new COVID cases in Europe lately. I note Bob from LA seems to have "had a positive experience and felt safe" and completed his Camino without any problems. His last comment about whether it feels 'right' for an individual to go...

    A Via Francigena Wave in 2022 ?

That's reassuring Bob - I had heard that more than a few places had closed for COVID (mainly dedicated pilgrim hostels - both private, municipal and religious - like the Cissa Pass,Santa Cristina & Orio Litta). I did follow a few people on Facebook walking this year and they seemed to...

    A Via Francigena Wave in 2022 ?

I noticed on the VF Facebook page that more people appear to be gearing up to walk in 2022 after deferring from previous years - I assume this is a response to international travel opening up. Any thoughts out there on this ? ie: Accommodation being open (especially hostels - Cissa pass etc) - a...

Placing the Via Francigena GPS route onto Offline Maps with Maps.me (iPhone & Android).

Just a little add on: If you download the files from this link - https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/via-francigena-kmz-files-for-google-earth-besancon-rome.63706/ - to your phone you can open them directly with Maps.me by clicking on them - it should then give you a choice what to...

    VF maps to maps.me

Hi kmccue - Check out the previous post 'Placing the VF GPS route onto Offline maps with Maps.me' - you can use the KMZ files from the post 'VF KMZ files for Google Earth' (only worked when I downloaded files leg by leg - not the whole route in 1 file) - all kudos to Melanie & Michael of...

Placing the Via Francigena GPS route onto Offline Maps with Maps.me (iPhone & Android).

Thanks trecile - haven't heard of this one - will have to look it up.I liked the Wikiloc site mentioned by Melanie & Michael because of the great elevation profiles and you can use it on your PC.Would love to find one of these apps I can install on PC - Maps.me is only on mobile.

Placing the Via Francigena GPS route onto Offline Maps with Maps.me (iPhone & Android).

Have wondered how to place GPS tracks onto offline maps and came across a great post - 'Melanie and Michael Go Walking' - their Blog mentions iPhone but it's good for Android too.Link below: https://memismsblogs.com/maps-me/ Great features mentioned by M...

Almost finished reading your blog - informative and enjoyable - thank you.You seemed to do some long Ks - no problems ?

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

Have made the download a bit easier by attaching the complete Modern VF as one file (instead of 1 file for each leg) - this will display on Google Earth as a red line - a blue line will also display which is roughly the route taken by Sigeric. Also added two files for the Lightfoot route...

    TV program alert for Aussies

Great - definitely having a look at that - especially since it's got Stephen K Amos in it.

Besancon - Rome: VF Official and Lightfoot routes for Google Maps + bits & bobs.

Have put the Official VF route (red line) and Lightfoot route (teardrops) onto Google maps for comparison / choices - occasionally have inserted shortcuts for various reasons and marked laundromats / tourist offices / different types of accommodation etc.Link below...

How the Via Francigena is Different from the Camino de Santiago

Great post Kevin - interesting - one question if you don't mind. Did you speak Italian and can you get by with basic phrases in Italy ?

I'm looking for good elevation maps for the VF Lightfoot route.

Have had a look at the rise to Pontalier and rise Pontarlier to Jougne using the Google earth fly by feature - also some sections leading up to the Grand St Bernard pass - it gives you some idea of the topography you're facing without actually walking it. You might need KMZ files for Google...

I'm looking for good elevation maps for the VF Lightfoot route.

Thanks Alwyn - I probably would have removed this post by now (as you can see it's had a huge amount of feedback over time) but I'm not sure how. I did manage to get some elevation profiles from Kazrobbo and then found more on the 'outdooractive' website which I have posted on this site. I will...

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

I like to compare the Lightfoot route with the official one just for the second option it gives you. Sometimes switching between Google Maps street view and Google earth can show you a way through if you're having problems - a solution can sometimes be seen on Google earth which won't show up on...

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

Hi Sheena - the red line is the route which I obtained from the Official VF site.I assume they would be signposted being the official route but I can't guarantee it. Hopefully they are consistent and will be signed. David Hope you have a great time in May.
