    US ATM cards not working

I withdrew cash from a Unicojo Banca in Caceres Thursday night with nary an issue.

    My only regret walking

You won’t be alone. Even on days you *want* to be alone, you won’t be. You will make fast friends, acquaintances, and a Camino Family — abd you will be seeing them all, repeatedly, every day until you reach Santiago. Then you will celebrate together. Buen Camino!

Comment by 'SeattleJen' in media 'Leaving Puente la Reina'

Lovely photo! It was getting dark and I was staying in Maneru for the night so I couldn't spend much time in Puente during my 2018 Camino. However, I had a lovely afternoon hanging out there the following year when I was visiting Spain with my kid. I will stay overnight there for my next Camino.

    Offer one Camino suggestion.....

Also, if you get a pedi before leaving for the Camino, DO NOT CHOOSE BLUE NAIL POLISH. As it chips off/grows out, fellow pilgrims (and a foot doctor in Burgos) will be very concerned that you’re losing your toenails. 😬

    Offer one Camino suggestion.....

I mostly used the duct tape for blisters, but I also had to do a bit of MacGyver-ing on equipment.

    Offer one Camino suggestion.....

Women need TP no matter what. But I hear you.

    Offer one Camino suggestion.....

Everyone is giving great philosophical advice, so here is my very boring/practical advice for first-timers (just a few tidbits; I could write a 94 point list if there was time): 1. Never pass a town without using the facilities (esp if you're female). Remember to pay the "potty tax" and not...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 4.0.

Ponferrada, May 5, 2018. Spring Fair on the street in front of the Aldi Hotel where I was staying. It was exactly what I needed when I was starting to feel low again (my first breakdown was in Astorga, and I was close to #2 this day). I wasn't sure what I had experienced that night, but found an...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 4.0.

Somewhere near O Pedrouzo (I think?), May 2018.

Camino Safety for Women - an Interview with Sara

I did the same. Every night I sent my husband a screenshot of my location on Google maps and the name of the place I was staying. There was only one time I feared for my safety -- I was the only person staying in a private room in a private albergue outside Leon, and the owner was being very...

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 4.0.

This pic was 6 months after my 2018 Camino in Chartres, France. I was on a "normal" vacation with the spouse when I suddenly spotted the markers (and then excitedly followed them through town). I had been to Chartres before, but never noticed the markers until this trip. It's as if my brain had...

Comment by 'SeattleJen' in media 'Pamplona April 2018'

It's ok! I'm actually sad to learn that the hotel is now an Alda (not that there is anything wrong with Alda, only that I loved the fact that it seemed to be a family-owned, family-run hotel when I was there).

Comment by 'SeattleJen' in media 'Pamplona April 2018'

Actually, this pic was taken very early April 2018, and the Napoleon route had just opened a few days earlier. i think that is snow (but not part of the mountains that the Frances runs through). This is the location of the hotel I stayed in (room faced north): https://goo.gl/maps/Kzur8CWnY561UDMg6

    Pamplona April 2018

Pamplona from my first "rest day" treat -- Hotel Eslava in old town, looking over the convent.

San Froilan festival in Leon - any experience?

I happened to walk into Leon (+one planned rest day) the last weekend of April in 2018 and found myself in the middle of an intense festival. I loved the atmosphere and the celebrations, but it was wall-to-wall celebrants... almost all local Spaniards, very few pilgrims. Even though I'm a city...

Comment by 'SeattleJen' in media 'Afraid to go alone?'

I walked the Frances solo in April-May 2018, but I was never really ALONE, even on days I wanted to be. I came home with about a dozen new lifelong friends scattered about the globe.

    Sarria pilgrims

Sarria to Santiago, walking earlyish May (thank goodness I blogged all this so I could remember): Sarria to Portomarin -- TONS of people. I hadn't seen that many people on the trail all at once since the 200+ of us all left Roncesvalles at the same time. It was shockingly crowded. Portomarin...

    Sarria pilgrims

I've been thinking about this the last week or so. I was very lucky in that my job situation allowed me to take off for 8 weeks to walk from SJPDP to Santiago (plus screw off time). I wasn't annoyed by the "Sarria pilgrims" at all, especially since I had been asked for a month why there were not...

    Snoring

Sure. But what if nothing can be done? What if there's no medical basis for the snoring? And why doesn't anyone bring earplugs for themselves since it's on every single Camino packing list out there AND roughly half of the population snores? Those who don't snore get to self-righteously rage and...

    First Bar Syndrome

First bar, second bar, bar down a side street, bar right in front of you — my Camino rule of thumb became “never pass a banos/servicios, no matter what.” Yes, I paid a lot of “potty taxes” on the trail (vino, agua, or beer), but I also never once had to find a secluded tree, either. 😉 Because of...
