I'm late to the game but chiming in never the less! I am from Victoria, British Columbia on the south west coast of British Columbia. Victoria is on Vancouver Island which confuses the heck out of many a tourist because the city of Vancouver is across the Strait of Georgia from us. Victoria...
We found ourselves grumbling about a happy skippy group with fresh feet, and without packs, who were singing their way up a hill. We actually had a good laugh about it in the end.
I have to admit to some occasionally judgemental behaviour regarding the last 100k of the Frances, or those who don't carry their packs. It hadn't occurred to me that the same thing might happen regarding different routes although I tend to admire those who walk at times, or on routes that I...
Beautiful dog! I feel like that is likely him. It was 3 years ago though and I searched for a photo but alas I don't seem to have one of him.
My later experience was traumatic at the time, more so because the people in the immediate vicinity, as well as the dogs owner ignored our requests...
Wow - these stories of Leon are very similar to the dog we encountered in Las Herrerias. He was hanging around the street and I asked about his breed and who he belonged to. I was told by the volunteer hospitalero that he was a special breed for protecting the livestock from wolves and that he...
For a minute there I thought I wrote this myself! Ear plugs, the buff eye mask, magnesium, melatonin, and if needed Theanine. I'm quite the babe when I get into my bunk!
Hello fellow Canadian! My feeling is that yes, you may have things to pack up, but there is no need to do it at your bed. Grab everything and take it out of the room to pack it to minimize the disturbance to others. I can only guess that perhaps people are in general sleeping a bit longer in...
We were walking the Portugese route in August. One night a young couple realized that they had accidentally booked accomodation 50K away the next night and planned to get up really early. I thought it might be wise to speak to some of the other people in our room of approximately 16 and...
Thank you for sharing these inspirational stories Kevin. I have been wallowing a bit lately (injuries, Mom with dementia taking a lot of time away from opportunities to exercise and train for our Camino in August, etc. etc.). A kick in the pants to remind me of what true struggles look like and...
I too purchased one of these female urinary devices (as they are called) for my first camino. My husband referred to it as "The whizatoma"! I gave it up for our second trek and resorted to squatting. Alas, an issue with my knee has me contemplating it's return for this year's Camino.
I must say, I'd much rather look at him parading around the albergue waiting for his laundry to dry, than some of the body types (my own included), that are on display in briefs and t shirts! Uh, not that I was looking.
People who know me are shocked that most days on the Camino, I am up and out the door to walk about 10 k before getting a coffee. In fact, I am rather shocked by the whole thing myself! At home I shuffle from bed to the kitchen looking miserable until coffee can be located. Just knowing that...
