I love going into a quiet bar and trying to communicate with the person attending. Many times between the two of us there is just enough English and Spanish that is understood that an enjoyable conversation about the bar, the town, the pilgrimage route, etc. can be had. I guess that is why I...
"Walk your own Camino" has been quoted throughout this thread. Some hold it as a Number One Rule. Yet, for a number of reasons, I find it to be little more than a bumper sticker slogan that can be used to excuse damaging or negative behaviors.
My number one rule when backpacking or walking a...
Gerard, you are a considerate cyclist as are many cycling pilgrims. And I wish that your characterization of local cyclists as generally respectful toward pedestrian pilgrims were always true. But there's the rub. It appears that the most frequent cyclists who create the majority of issues are...
'Bicycle Fodder' was not calling a name. It is a recognition of a 'cause' and a potential 'effect'. Those who want to limit hearing are no real issue for me. But the ability to hear approaching aggressive cyclists to help reduce one's risk of being harmed is a good thing in my mind. :)
The issue is not about bicyclists, it is about pedestrians. As one who is very hard of hearing, there is no equivalency between voluntarily, perhaps, reducing one sense that can provide a warning to help you prevent an injury from reckless riders, versus one who struggles with hearing.

The Romance-A-Grino Camino.
To be eligible for a Compostela, a Romance-A-Grino must have walked 880 consecutive kilometers while making continuing progress to Santiago de Compostela along an established and accepted route. The Romance-a-grino Credencial must have 6 sellos/stamps per day...
Wearing headphones/earbuds and listening to music is a great strategy for those wishing to isolate themselves from irritating and annoying bicycle bells, horns, and shouted warnings from cyclists doing Warp Factor 3.
Oops. . .yeah, I didn't want the post to be a downer as much as an encouragement and a little reminder that, as another mentioned, things put off may never be realized. Age may be a state of mind or just a number, but it also comes with the increasing odds of discovering potential issues of...
In tone, I find the Baby Taylor just a teensy bit lacking of the same level of detail and fullness of the compact/same size Martin. That does not include the “backpacking Martin” which I find to be a tinny sounding, anemic instrument, but good enough if I were desperate enough to need a guitar...
I will likely not be the typical reply, but outside of specific venues- churches, plazas, restaurants, etc - I always feel much of the impromptu ‘music’ is akin to aural graffiti.
Everyone else’s mileage/opinions may vary. 😄
Because the need for a taxi can be quite unexpected and out on the Camino away from a town, I made it a practice to take a photo with my phone of the taxi numbers seen in bars or stores I stopped at, and even on paper tags attached to signs where the camino crosses roadways, etc.
Every backpacking trip that I have done since the age of 5 is a camino. I have only done 3 Pilgrimages, and those began at a point along a route recognized by the Church as an official route into Santiago de Compostela while following their rules.
Those who come from nations where there has been strong anti-littering and Leave No Trace outdoor programs for decades are not the target, though. It seems this is more of an issue for pilgrims where such strong messaging in nations, and even legal and ethical enforcement, has been missing...
Mine was a pilgrimage as a fellowship time with God and the Compostela has great meaning for me. My first Compostela was done in the name of my first child, who died within a few short hours after his birth. It and my second Compostela are not souvenirs, which is why I had no real interest in...
