    Backpack?

Yes you want exterior pockets for water bottles and bananas. You also want a large mesh pocket for sandals and wet stuff like just put away rain gear and socks and underwear that didn’t dry during the night. Buen Camino

Goretex is a waste of money?

I should have mentioned that I carry an umbrella so I can keep my hood down and neck unzipped. But not in very strong winds. Buen Camino

    Backpack size

I currently use a Zpacks 38L Nero. I have to carry a liter sized bag of pills so the pack is stuffed. I have to carry my albergue sandals in the outside mesh pocket. I have used two different 45 L backpacks. I walk in spring and fall and would prefer to stick with 45L. But the superlight...

To those who brought a tent: How do I keep the total weight down?

On our first Camino my wife, daughter and I carried two ultralight tents from Hendaye to Gijon. We were ardent Alaska backpackers. We saw few nice campsites. Some very crowded campgrounds. If an albergue was completo we learned that a credit card was MUCH LIGHTER than those tents and mailed...

Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

To both of those you might also consider carrying a light weight UV umbrella. When you are steaming inside your buttoned up rain gear you can flip back your hood and loosen your neck and cool off under the umbrella. And carry your own shade in the sun. Buen Camino

Buying shoes on a Sunday. Are sports stores open?

Are you flying from Kosovo to Madrid? There are several outdoor sports stores in the La Latina neighborhood of Madrid with a great variety of boots and trail runners. Buen Camino. Ps most are open on Sundays

May-June Camino Frances - Rain Gear & Eating ware

Yes each to his own. On the Mozárabe from Málaga in March my daughter wore Hoka speed goats and I wore La Sportiva Gore Tex Raptor mid height Two days of heavy rains and one stream crossing soaked hers more than mine. We each got one small blister and we are each sticking to our chosen...

May-June Camino Frances - Rain Gear & Eating ware

Bottle of wine. Mighty fine. But heavy. A copa is much lighter in a bar or Albergue. Buen Camino

Difficult to read yellow route on Buen Camino app

I added the mapy.cz app before my last Camino and found it very useful navigating through cities. Cities are where I loose the Camino. Buen Camino

    Poles or No Poles?

My preference for using one pole exactly mirrors Camino Chrissy's post. Except I bring my one pole with me --- AND I haven't broken any body parts -- yet. Buen Camino

    Poncho in SJPDP?

I asked my friend why all his photos of his Camino del Norte partner showed a bright yellow pack cover, even on sunny days. For visibility? No. He said his partner initially bragged about how inexpensive his new pack was. Within a few days it was falling apart and he had to use the pack...

    Poles or No Poles?

I always just carry one, a very light carbon fiber Black Diamond. It is usually folded up in the side pocket of my backpack. But where the footing is tricky -- rocky, muddy, slippery, very steep, crossing streams -- it is an invaluable third leg. And see above. Great fly swatter. Buen Camino

    Favourite Socks

The smoother the skin on your feet the less friction they will encounter as they hammer the ground thousands of times a day. Aim for "baby feet" and use whatever works for you. Buen Camino

    Socks

    Yes

    Socks

I don't think medium cushion will be too hot. I take one pair of medium and one of thicker Darn Tough on all my Caminos, north and south. That's because I have to wear different size boots due to a big bunion. In Vietnam us old soldiers (very young, then) were (delightfully) issued thick...

    Waterproof Jacket/Coat

At the top I have an umbrella. Next a Gore-tex jacket that goes most of the way down my butt, next a rain kilt, next, light weight knee high gaiters that keep the rain out of my Gore tex boots. As an old guy I feel kinda funny wearing the kilt -- come on, it's really a skirt -- but it works...
