Just get a good pair of trail runners before you start. They will last you way past the length of the Camino. On my last Camino, in 2019, of over 1000 kilometres, my trail runners were less than half worn. I have used them for walking at home until last month and they would have done about 3000...
Hi Mycroft, I have a very small camera. It has a viewfinder as I cannot see what I am trying to photograph in a screen on the back of a modern camera in daylight. I do not have any other electronic devices.
Hello Real Pixie, I have 8" x 4" (200 x 100mm) flat zipped pouch. Inside it goes my cash, cash passport card, credential, passport, and insurance details. When full, it is only about 1/2" (12mm) thick. It is on a piece of elastic which goes around my waist under my walking shorts. You cannot...
I have never experienced any of these problems. Simply because I don't have a cellphone. I have never felt the need for one and I get on perfectly well without one. I have done three Caminos and starting a fourth next month, all without phone, email, text or information on the net. I am 81 and...
Hi Kathymac, I do not know the best time to start there. I personally start about mid June I one started towards the end of May. When starting at these times, the weather seems to be settled. Not as wet as April - May and not as hot as August - September. People usually start when they can get...
I take a Cash Card with me loaded with the currencies I will be using. I withdraw cash from ATMs, usually those in bank foyers and pay cash for everything. I have never had a problem.
On my last three Caminos I have used one of those cheap plastic ponchos from a cheap Asian shop that cost $NZ 2.50. That is about 1.25 Euros or $US 1.50. I have had to use it about eight times in both light and heavy rain. It goes over my pack and keeps both me and the pack perfectly dry. I must...
I live in a medium sized town in New Zealand. I am 80 years old so I have time to spare. The locals say that I am a "professional volunteer" because I volunteer for anything that needs doing in the town This includes helping in Op-Shops, helping run Xmas parades and Xmas carnivals, I am the...
My daughter and I will be on the Portuguese on June and July starting in Lisbon. We will arrive in Porto about the 27th of June. We want to stay for three nights. Can we stay in an albergue for that long? If not has any body got any suggestions for a very cheap place to stay.
Fortunately New Zealand is surrounded by water and a long way from the rest of the world. That is just the way that us Kiwis like it. As a consequence, if we want to go anywhere else we must use the big metal bird in the sky. I don't like the emissions from aircraft any more than anyone else but...
My wife and I watched the movie "Six ways to Santiago" about six different people doing their own independent CF. It was only 20 minutes into the movie when I turned to my wife and said "I have to do that"
Three months later I was in St jean looking up the hill and could not wait to get started...
Hello Chronic Walker, A lot of pilgrims, after reaching Santiago, walk on to Finisterre to the 0.000k marker by the lighthouse. Muxia is a small seaside town about 36k to the north of Finisterre on the coast. Many pilgrims do not consider their Camino complete until being photographed at the marker.
I have walked three Caminos and never had a "Camino Family". Like most pilgrims, I kept meeting the same people on and off at the albergues I stayed at. We had some great conversations but were not a "Family" as such. On my last Camino with my daughter, we kept coming across the same people...
