I am a Tenkara guy also. Did not bring a rod but saw some huge trout (5 lbs) in the river in the center of the town of Estella (French way). Two weeks ago
In general pack weight and fun are inversely related. Less pack weight = more fun and more pack weight = less fun. Light is Right! We are pilgrims not pack mules. We tend to carry too much gear out of fear. We fear that we are going to be uncomfortable or cold or hungry or injured or...
I will be walking my fourth winter french route starting Jan 11 till Feb 28. My winter pack weight has never exceeded 14 lbs. I have not been cold or uncomfortable. Trust the advice that has been posted!
I love winter caminos! I have done st Jean to the sea three times in the winter and am starting my fourth on Jan 11. Never had a problem with an albergue or a place to eat. I live in Florida USA and found the temp on the winter camino to be very comfortable. See you in Jan!
I have three winter camino Frances under my belt with number 4 coming up in January. Crocs are the way to go. Light, warmer then sandals and you can walk in them if you need a break from your boots. I walked with a pilgrim in early March who wore them the entire way instead of boots
I stayed in municipals whenever possible but used cash for everything (train to SJPDP, bus from Finnesterre, all meals ect and returned home with about 300 euro.
On all three Caminos I took 2000 euro in all 20 euro notes. Divided them into 4 bundles of 500 euro each and heat sealed them into empty candy bar wrappers. I kept each bundle in a different location. No problems.
