I would like to walk the Baztan from Pamplona to Bayonne this fall. It appears to be well marked from Bayonne to Pamplona with yellow arrows, but has anyone noticed if it is marked in the other direction?
Last fall I walked from SJPP to Hendaye on the Voie Nive-Bidassoa using information from the association in the pilgrim's office at SJPP. They can provide handouts with directions plus lodging and give you updates. I didn't have any problems finding open lodging and stayed in pilgrim friendly...
Thanks for redirecting the credit, but thanks for providing the link. I'm faced with same quandary, both routes look great and maybe it's a matter of which to do first. After seeing this book I'm leaning toward Arles (also ordered the Miam Miam Dodo). Enjoy your decision process...
Bon Chemin!
Thank you for sharing!! Beautiful photography and your descriptions capture the experience wonderfully. Timing is great since I'm currently planning to follow in your footsteps in April.
Last fall I walked from SJPP to Hendaye on the Voie Nive-Bidassoa using information from the association in the pilgrim's office at SJPP. They were happy to help and provided handouts with directions on lodging. You could also take the GR 10, but that was too much climbing for me at that...
I agree with the advice from good_old_shoes. Even if campgrounds are quite full they can probably find a place for a tent, especially for a walker, that was my experience. Plus I found the camping culture quite friendly.
Just finished the Voie Le Puy, it's a wonderful walk. My budget had a wide range of daily expenses since I used gîtes as well as camped (not uncommon) and enjoyed both. Gîte with demi pension was 32 to 40 Euros, and there were some fantastic meals. Restaurant meals were 12-20, but really...
I used a guide from the Association Rhône-Alps des Amis de Saint-Jacques that I found very reliable. It's available from their website. It covers the GR 65 to Le Puy en Velay. I was also able to make a small spreadsheet to use as a quick reference when planning stages and I'll attach that as...
it may depend when you go but in general there are few walking the GR65 from Geneva. It seems the gîtes are open and happy to see us. Tourist offices may have current information about who's open and I have found them helpful.
After Le Puy en Velay you should expect to reserve a day ahead...
I arrived in France June 9 and started walking right off the train in St-Julien-en-Genevois. It has been wonderful. There are Covid precautions indoors in stores etc. but overall it is relaxed. Just do whatever people want you to do.
I met very few walkers until Le Puy en Velay, then there are...
Bon Chemin!
I'm planning to start just across the border in France about June 10th since it doesn't look like Geneva will be open yet. Hopefully there will be a few other pilgrims along the way to Le Puy.
Here is a well thought out lightweight tent, used with hiking poles, that might meet your criteria. A walking friend was using it on the St. Olavsleden last fall. I was so impressed I ordered one when I got home. There is also a 2-person version available.
Thanks for posting your experience LTfit. You've had an adventure! Too bad about the rain and the mud. I can imagine how bad it can get walking through all the fields and appreciate my luck with the weather just 2 weeks ago. Look forward to seeing the rest of your story.
To be honest, I was conflicted about the gated finca. I resented having to walk the extra kms on a less interesting forest road, but the markings the Guadalajara association has put up are very explicit. The day before the hospitalero Esteban in Salmeron had gone over the route and mentioned I...
This camino has been different that way. I recommend the Albergue in Sigüenza, friendly owners, new place with pilgrim thoughtful design. 4 rooms, mine had 3 double bunks, bathroom, small kitchen (large well equipped kitchen downstairs by the common room), balcony with clothes line, beautiful...
I arrived in Mandayona about 5pm and got no response from the number. Might be better to call ahead to make arrangements if you want to stay there.
I'm in Sigüenza tonight and staying at a newer private albergue by the castle on Calle mayor. It's 20€. The president of the Guadalajara...
