On the bus from Bayonne to St. Jean Pied de Port the day before I started my last camino I already had 4 friends to walk with off and on (and party with in Santiago). Then that night in the albergue I made four more friends, one will probably be a friend for life.
You really have to try hard...

I always stay at the Hotel Montenegro. It's just a block away from the Cathedral, but more importantly, just across the street from my favorite bar.

I took along lyrics to songs and on those days on the meseta, I put that time to good use. Learned the first verse and chorus to Ultreia. And I don't speak French.
I guess I have to differ. It's not that I don't like the Meseta, but it's my least favorite of the sections. I love Carrion de los Condes, and several other places along the Meseta, but I just can't say that walking those long, straight, flat, featureless sections is better than the SJPdP to...
At the risk of being called a blasphemer, I'd skip any of the parts between Burgos and Hospital de Obrigo. While I find that section to have some inspiring moments, walking along beside a busy highway on a flat, dusty senda tends to get a bit tedious after a while.
