The climbs and descents are not bad at all— I can’t even remember the steepness. Definitely not in the same category as Molinaseca. The thing about Hospitales is that it’s a very long day with no services. But it was one of the most glorious days! I walked on my bum ankle (injured and...
@peregrina2000 -- I just checked my notes and these are the directions I had written down in 2015. We were able to follow them easily. It seemed to take longer to get back to the camino than we expected and we were concerned a couple of times that we had missed something. But we kept going...
My memory is that neither is marked. I mapped them on google and trusted to luck! Going up to the monument is easy and you really can’t get lost! It’s just straight up! Getting back to the Primitivo was a little more complicated, but we stuck to the directions I had written down and we got...
HI All -- Thanks for the bits of info. I have posted a link to the most up to date guide in the Resources Section of the forum. You can also download it from my blog (link in my signature). The new CSJ Guide should be coming out this spring, so I really don't have plans to update mine again...
Hi All, I have not been on this forum for some time, but recently I have received some updated information for the Primitivo guide I posted in 2015 in the resources section of this site. I decided that I should try to update the Albergues on the entire Guide as I didn't want folks to think it...
Hmmm -- everybody's experiences is so different. In June 2015, we didn't book a single day ahead. The only day we had any trouble was at Berducedo -- but we took a LOOONG time to walk over Hospitales (mainly talking and sightseeing with the group (see below) and were very late coming into town...
I would be surprised if you have to book ahead at all! But have you considered the weather? Elevations on the Primitivo are quite high. There may wel be snow, cold temps and wind. Liz
You can take a .pdf on your phone. -- just save your re-worked version of the guide as a .pdf and then download it to ibooks or send it to yourself as an email attachment and then open the attachment on your phone.
I guess I would say that having a guide is a good thing if only so you know...
Hi Lessons -- I did a guide for the Primitivo that is posteds is in the Resources section of the site. Its current as of last June. If you message me, I can send it to you in word so you can tweak and revise. We walked with a French guy who sometimes camped. There wan't much organized but...
Anemone -- I unfortunately did not write down her name either but we enjoyed coffee and I bought a pair of her macrame earrings!
We are walking four stages on the California Mission Walk this thanksgiving. Next summer I'm not sure. But we are thinking now of walking from Le Puy when we retire...
Hi Pelegrin, yes -- we did Hospitales -- It was the second hardest day for me (going down to the dam before Grandas was the hardest). But it was the most absolutely glorious experience. We were worried about thunderstorms up there and made plans at Campiello to walk in groups (hence the big...
I agree with Mark on this. Frankly I wouldn't use running shoes either, but I think that is me. The trail is pretty rocky and uneven in many places. Having good lateral support will be important. YOu will do lots of steep up and downs and for fairly extended distances (the longest down hike...
Hi Primitivo-ites.
I have not been online much this fall. My work schedule has eaten up my free time almost completely. I finally finished a video of our Primitivo from this past summer. The link is also on my blog. Its public on youtube here.
Liz
The one thing I would add is that the walk from Vilaviciosa to Oviedo takes you past the Iglesia de San Salvador de Valdedios. This is a 9th century site that is supposed to be beautiful and is very historic. We started in Oviedo, but I thought long and hard about Villaviciosa just so that we...
My pack was 7.5 kilo with 2 liters of water.
On the other stuff I'd say take the bag or the liner not both. Mi think a liner would be fine. Most places had blankets. No need for an air mattress. I LOVED my Altus poncho. I'm not sure what you mean by a charger brick but it very heavy. I'm...
Hi Piccata,
We didn't bring anything from home. We really didn't plan to carry "emergency food" either when we walked the Frances or this past summer on the Primitivo. We usually ate lunch at a picnic table or on the grass and had a combo of cheese, bread, dried fruits, peanuts and an...
I've been meaning to do this and I'm sitting in a loooong , booooring conference call at the moment so I thought I would multi-task.
Here's what I took and my reflections on it after I returned:
Osprey Kestral men's small Backpack -- this was a new purchase and is a 33 liter pack -- It was...
