A brief taste of the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage

I (mostly) walked no. 1 to 38 in November and a bit of December last year. I speak decent Japanese, but non-fluent (by my standards, at least). I enjoyed my time very much. I am an introvert but enjoy human interaction in small numbers. I found innkeepers uniformly nice and helpful, as well as...

Is this powered USB hub setup safe?

100 to 240 VAC 50 to 60 Hz covers power "normal power" in just about all of the world including Spain. Have you tried using this hub to recharge your phone? You might find that it charges rather slowly or not at all from a device that is deisgned primarily to be a hub, not a charger.

    Sim card for Via Podiensis

(the OP asks specifically about France) Last year walking from Le Puy I was on Bouygues telecom. (via eSim) it was fine for coverage and data speeds. I think Orange might have better support for English speakers, maybe. They *market* better to English speakers. :) I had to get help from a French...

Are there Book swaps on the Camino. What book would you take.

I did not carry a book on my walk from Le Puy last year. I did have a tablet and read the online New York Times many days. This year, late September I'm going to walk from Nasbinals to Rocamadour (le Puy route), time and lodging permitting! It will be the height of the US election season. I...

    Le Puy route

I have not walked in Spain, so I can only offer a brief summary of my experience. I walked last year Le Puy to SJPDP starting May 13. I was 64 years old, and I live in Colorado so the elevation early on was not an issue for me. I tried to aim for 15 km per day which was great for my feet, but I...

Spain total solar eclipse, August 12, 2026: Are camino towns preparIng?

Seeing a total eclipse is a VERY cool experience, so I wouldn't discourage anybody from going to see one. Consider this from https://eclipsophile.com/tse2026/ Viewing the eclipse in Spain is complicated by the low sun, only 10 degrees of elevation on the north coast and a mere 4 degrees above...

What do you wash your clothes with

I started with a shampoo bar, but the plastic soap holder I got was water-tight and before long I had a plastic box of soapy goo. It went in the trash when I bought a small bottle of liquid shampoo and used it for everything. I mostly sloshed things in the sink for a couple of minutes. Then...

Solo walkers - what kinds of food do you buy at grocery stores?

For me in France this year, it was mostly dry sausage, nuts, fresh fruit, fig newtons (a similar French product FigOla), occasional cheese. I rarely had to buy dinner in a grocery store but one night I had some quick cooking lentils, supplemented with sardines and a tomato. Garbanzos sound like...

Light sleeping bag or silk liner?

I walked Le Puy to SJPdP starting in May this year. It was cool the first two weeks. All the gites had blankets. I was never cold. Often too warm. I had a liner only.

    Hiking shoes or sandals?

Keen Newport for me, the leather one, with socks. Worked very well for me on Chemin du Puy this year. The socks get rather dirty. There is definite risk to picking footwear so close to your start. Its very much an individual choice, advice here may be useless to you, including this one. :)

Help! Pack too heavy! — CF Sept & Oct — Senior Woman

lots of suggestions here. I walked in France, not Spain, so allow for some regional difference. Just a few thoughts. the 50l pack is too big, and can you really fit a waist pack while wearing the backpack? for that matter why the waist pack? two different shoes for the walk is a lot, but...

Taxi share from Pamplona to St Jean, Aug 25, 2023

I think the ALSA bus leaves Pamplona around noon.

Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Privat d’Allier in one day?

it rained the day before I did the descent into monistrol, but little or no rain on that day. it's a steep descent, go slowly. I did not have poles, but used trees for stability at times. the ascent was steep, but did not stress me like the descent did. I had a night's sleep between the two.

    Bus from Pamplona to SJPDP

as last week it was one bus per day. I rode sjpp to pamplona, the incoming bus had a fair number of people on it. my bus going back was almost empty. 7 of us I think and two got off at Roncesvalles.

Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Privat d’Allier in one day?

my first two nights were montbonnet and then monistrol. the descent into monistrol is very steep. I thought that descent was tougher than the climb out of monistrol the next day. the wise pilgrim app has an elevation profile diagram that is nice and detailed

Looking for advice about Camino Le Puy

I am three days away from sjpdp now in Lichos. Walking solo. Started in Le Puy on May 13. May was very busy. I had booked the first 8 days two months in advance, but finding the gites before conques was very difficult. After Conques, it got easier, and after Cahors, even easier. In May it was...

In search of a contributor for a Podiensis guide.

I am on the VP now, leaving Cahors tomorrow morning. The podiensis app has been useful mostly for the maps and elevation profile. I can contribute some first hand info on accommodations where I've stayed, and maybe some photos. my photos are mostly scenery and buildings not of gites or people...

Going guideless on the Le Puy?

I have not walked CF, so can't compare. Not speaking good French, it's a bit isolated, lots of time for thinking. Can be a bit of a mental challenge. I have been physically challenged for some bits, but the difficult terrain is some relatively short steep climbs, not hours and hours of hard work.

Reservations - how far in advance

it was tough to find places between le puy and conques in may this year. It has gotten easier since conques and feels even easier after Cahors. I find it easier to make one booking a day than trying to do several in one day since one booking is dependent on the previous night... I'm trying to...
