I think the bus might start/end at Plaza St. Domingo. I investigated taking the bus but decided to walk. I should have taken the bus since the walk is not very pleasant after crossing the river at San Marcos.
I wore a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 5s because they had a Vibram sole. Did a nice job of gripping on the rocky surfaces and helped me survive a damp descent into Portomarin (along with my poles). Walked from St. Jean and had sufficient tread remaining when I reached Santiago.
I highly recommend reading Beebe Bahrami's Camino de Santiago. It's full of the history and sites along the way (along with recommendations for lodging, food and events). Not just the larger towns but the small ones. I carried a copy with me and saw others who also had the book and were...
Maybe, if all goes well. My flight landed at 6 am. US/Canada immigration line just opened so only 15-20 minute wait. Wait for baggage was about 20-30 minutes. At 7 am it may be much busier depending on when you will be traveling.
I took RER to the Denfort station then 20-minute...
I stayed there in Sept 2022. It's located in the small hamlet of Urdaniz just west of the magnesium mine. Less than 1/2 mile off the trail and across a highway. Run by a nice couple (wife speaks Engligh) who live on 2nd floor. Stocked honor bar, good communal meal and breakfast. I took...
RER is the cheapest option. Since you are coming from USA you will probably land in Terminal 2 where there is clear signage to the trains once you leave baggage claim. If using a taxi, then you need to go all the way outside the building to the official taxi stand. Rates to/from CDG are...
I have a debit card from Fidelity that I have used for cash at ATMs outside of the US. If you have an existing Fidelity account (or establish a new account online) then you can easily create a cash and spend account to get the card. Very easy to move money from your existing Fidelity or from...
FYI - There is a chapter of the American Pilgrims in the St. Louis area. Look up their page on Facebook. They have frequent hikes and a number of members who have completed one or more Caminos.
I walked the Camino last fall at 68 (turned 69 while in Burgos). My training consisted of workouts on an elliptical to build muscle strength in my legs during the colder months and walking 4-5 hours several days a week in Spring and Summer with an almost full pack. Some of those walks were...
I used Apple on my phone since most restaurants and stores have handheld devices for touchless credit transactions. I rarely used an actual card. The price of a meal includes tip so the amount on the bill is the amount you pay. Bars and other shops usually have a limit (usually 10E) for...
I had to do some trial and error when I first tried to use my debit card in Spain. In the US, I get the option to withdraw money from checking or savings (even though my card is linked only to Savings). In Spain I got 3 options: Current account, Checking or Savings. Current Account is the...
Do you mean Santa Maria de Eunate which is a short detour from Uterga to Obanos?
It's pleasant walk through the vegetable fields on the way from Uterga. Unfortunately, I got there on a Monday, and the church was closed. I was interested based on the article in Bahrami's book about the...
I used Climpchamp because it was free (available in Windows 11). It's a bit clunky and slow and at times. Climpchamp uses swim lanes so you can layer different types of media. I kept it simple by just laying out the photos/video, added subtitles or titles then added the music (Spanish guitar...
I have a beard that I usually keep very short, so I had room for it to grow. I did go to barbers in Burgos, Astorga and Santiago to get a shave and trim of my beard. Each barber also shaved the back of my neck. The barber in Astorga didn't want to give me a shave because he didn't have a...
I stayed at the Hotel Mondes (https://www.hotelmontes.es/el-hotel/?lang=en) at the end of Oct. Rates seemed reasonable compared to other options near the Cathedral. Building sits between the Rua Villar and Rúa da Raiña - 2 minutes from the Cathedral. My room overlooked the Praza de Fonseca.
You may want to check out Casa Raichu in Orbanos. I stayed there last September. I think all the rooms were on the 2nd floor (with shared bath) so nice and quiet. There are rooms with twin beds. The owner is a good cook so I would recommend purchasing the dinner since the there is only 1...
I used my Fidelity Debit card. They paid the ATM fees and had good conversation rates. Their site says there is no minimum balance (although you probably would want to fund it when you open it) and it doesn't appear that you need to have any other account at Fidelity but I would call and...
Brierley created maps in his day job which explains his approach to his books. He broke up each camino into sections based on:
1. the average 25k per day (on Camino Frances) that many people were walking back in the early 2000s, and
2. sufficient # of infrastructure (beds & food) at an...
