Finding my way along the route

Yes, I agree with all that has been said. You will not be alone and 99% of other pilgrims will look after you. The first stage from SJPDP is tough, maybe break it in two by staying in Orrison. I am not sure about accommodation; personally, at that time of year, I would book in advance but my...

14 "spare" days in Santiago - what to do.

Take a train or bus to Bilbao (a long journey, admittedly) and then San Sebastian. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the Old Town with its great Plaza Nueva square stuffed with tapas (pintxos) bars. San Seb has beaches, a great bar scene and much more. Or what about Salamanca?

In search of a contributor for a Podiensis guide.

I have walked this route twice, it is beautiful. I am also a professional travel writer. Is this just free contributions, or paid-for? (Sorry to be blunt...but bills need to be paid!)

Pamplona lodging near train & /or or bus stations

By the way, the train station in Pamplona is not very close to the centre - not really walkable. Check Google Maps or Booking.com for hotel options, if you need them. The bus station, however, is very central and close to many hotels.

Pamplona during San Fermines, pros and cons?

My view is that this is a bad time. There will be NO accommodation, unless you book six months in advance, and you will have to pay three times as much as usual. You could sleep in the parks, as many do. It can be dangerous at this time - robbery, sexual assaults etc. There will be half a...

Has the Camino Frances become a victim of its own success?

I also enjoy the quiet times, but also the time to commune with others. It gives me mixed feelings, as part of me wants to celebrate the fact that some people who have perhaps not travelled widely are using the camino as their first step into 'adventure'. On the other hand, it seems that the...

    Is Ondarroa a worthwhile detour?

I would say 'no' as it has no outstanding attractions, unless you just want to see a fairly ordinary seaside town. (I write a guidebook to the Basque Country)

How social is the Camino Primitivo?

I did the Primitivo about ten years ago, no problem finding my Camino family. There was me, six Spanish and six Germans. We sometimes walked separately, sometimes in small groups, then all met up for meals and overnighting. It is probably busier now, but if you go anytime between May and...

Going guideless on the Le Puy?

Hi, I have done this route twice and loved it. Much better scenery than the Spanish part, not a procession but enough people to chat to. Most of it is well-signposted, but there is one early stage (maybe the second or third) which climbs to around 1300 metres and I encountered snow in April -...

    Short turnaround time in Bayonne

I cannot remember if the bus leaves from outside the train station, or from the bus station which is across the river. If it's the former, then definitely no problem.

    Short turnaround time in Bayonne

Well, it's a fairly small, unbusy station in Bayonne. The only danger is if there are track repairs between Bayonne and SJPDP, because if there are there will be a bus to replace the train. But you should be fine otherwise.

    Roger Brankin

Any contact details for Roger Brankin? I want to contact this gent, who wrote a guide to the Olvidado. Does anyone know how I can contact him? I am thinking of writing a guidebook to this route, I have the backing of a publisher, but would like to talk to him first.
