That is a very old hospice indeed. Although, this descriprion places the hospice very near to puente de santiago, not puente internacional.
I once came across an article about salmon fishing in the bidasoa river by the priory on the french side of puente de santiago. It had close-ups of some...
oh, yes, I see know. I somehow overlooked the island bit.
the river doesn't seem particularly shallow there on google maps (but maybe it is when the tide goes out?). perhaps the draw is the island where one could rest or hide if necessary.
I would guess that would be near today puente de santiago. the river there is wide and at low tide mostly shallow, as I recall. wooden posts were sticking out of the marshy ground most of the way along the pedestrian lane towards the bridge in the morning. (I read somewhere that these are...
the 'office hours' of the pilgrim attendance at the cathedral should be 15h till 18h monday to saturday (except holidays) april to september, but I seem to remember not finding anyone there last may. (I wished to get the tampon.) in july, though, we hunted down someone on the way out who looked...
the thesis has other interesting maps, but is otherwise completely unhelpful basque. 🤨
I have been wondering about this crossing for some time because it didn't seem logical that the route would cross the river where it is very wide and marshy. but for now I only studied those pilgrim diaries...
I have not yet. I am not yet there.
I am actually trying to solve the mystery of arnold von harff's litzauwe (between ernane and billafona), albert jouvin's litsaur (between ornita and iroulo) and guillaume manier's lichart (between andouin and billione). there is no village or town with such...
during my research about via bayona I came upon this thesis - I'm not sure what the actual title is, actually -, but on pages 32 and 33 is a beautiful map drawn in 1765 which shows the entire Camino Real de Coches in gipuzkoa. it shows both the old route via tunél de san adrián and the new route...
It was updated in 2013 after I walked the route in 2012. Absolutely check the facilities before you go, but my other historic obsessions should be ok. :-)
A catalan (meaning in catalan) sort of tourist documentary about the cami, with various monuments or places or people or food highlighted: Port de la Selva - Figueres, Borrassa - Girona, Girona - Sant Esteve d'en Bas, and then it goes to the volcanic zone and meanders via Olot to Roda de Ter...
Look on grozne. Yes, it is customary in France to call a day ahead (unless otherwise noted). If you learn a few phrases, that is very helpful. Otherwise, ask in turist offices to make a call for you, or a fellow pilgrim, or hospitalero.
The route is waymarked as a GR. It is indeed GR78...
I think they just came out with the vouchers and went one, two, three... from the start of the queue. I don't remember if we were asked, it was getting a bit chaotic with all the new arrivals. Noone refused. One was a bit late for lunch but we all showed up.
The vouchers are stapled to the...
It is totally possible to walk from lourdes to sjpp, I did the vice-versa route this summer and it took me 7 days (sjpp - st just ibarre - mauleon licharre - hopital st blaise - oloron - arudy - lestelle betharram - lourdes).
the waymarking is good, distances manageable, there is enough...
yup, the first ten pilgrims in line in the morning get an extra voucher with a number on it which then they give to the staff at the door of the restaurant at 13h. the restaurant has the entry on the ramp going down from the parador towards the pilgrim office.
I was one of the lucky ten (no. 9)...
we really need a map of the routes in france. they are popping up left and right these last years!
I've never stumbled upon via romieu in france before!
also, I am unclear on where voie du piémont starts now. it used to start in narbonne-plage, but since they are developping the montpellier...
you stumbled upon chemin d'arles (or via tolosana). you can help orient yourself with geoportail's topographic maps. a bit outdated at times, but still very very useful.
another pilgrim route now leaves montpellier SW towards fabregues to connect with voie du piémont pyréneen in carcassone, but...
