Would it be overkill to bring both a rain jacket and the Altus poncho in Oct/Nov?

You don’t need both - just bring the Altus. My mom loved the Altus - she wore it as both wind jacket and rain jacket. It became her favorite piece of gear. We walked the CF from Pamplona to Santiago in March and April of this year and she had it on as we walked thru snow, rain, sleet and...

Two pilgrims injured in an attack by a cow

We encountered Rubia Gallega cattle with horns on the CF multiple times in Galicia last month. I grew up with cattle, so I knew how to behave but still it is intimidating to have a herd WITH horns coming up the path with barbed wire fence on both sides and nowhere for you to go. One farmer...

    Money stolen in hostel

I’m sorry that happened to you. It sounds like you had a good strategy by keeping your bag on your bed with you. Unfortunately, some people have no values and have a lot of experience stealing from pilgrims. May it build resilience in you just like a day walking in the pouring rain. Buen camino.

    Social anxiety on the camimo

I’ve also struggled with social anxiety for the last five years or so, really ever since I gained a lot of weight. I was really self-conscious at first and reticent to meet anyone. My Camino goal was to force myself out of my comfort zone, experience unavoidable discomfort and build...

All trains are full on Renfe (around May 3-7, 2024)

We had the same issue 2 1/2 weeks ago so the we rented a car from the Santiago airport and drove there. The drive was gorgeous! We were happy we didn’t take the train.

How much cash to take for cash-only Camino purchases

Mom and I used 600 euros all together during our 38 days on the Camino Frances. We finished 2 1/2 weeks ago. I’d recommend 250 - 300 euros for your trip. We used cards as much as possible but a few pensións, albergues and many bars (restaurants) only took cash. Depends on your route -...

LIVE from the Camino Almost halfway there!

Wow that’s the spirit! Keep on soaking in every day!!!! When mom and I went through Castrojeriz and Frómista in March we had snow, sleet and powerful winds but even still there was much beauty to be found in every day! Buen camino!

    Weight limit on transported bags

I just finished the CF and used Jacotrans. My bag weighed 20 kilos. But perhaps their limit is 15 on paper. I didn’t have any issues.

    Ponferrada to Villafranca

The sideways entering Ponferrada were rough on my feet too. Unfortunately you will be alongside rural roads on asphalt leaving Ponferrada as well for a couple of hours until you cross the highway and enter a gorgeous vineyard. Leaving Villafranca the scenery is beautiful but you will be...

CPAP users: how do you bring your machine with you?

Just finished the CF from Pamplona to Santiago with my Resmed AirMini. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using Xylimelts since you won’t have a humidifier - otherwise your mouth gets drier than a desert and it wakes you up all through the night. For the uninitiated, Xylimelts are a brand of xylitol tablets...

LIVE from the Camino The massacre of a dear resting place.

My mom and I walked through the ‘massacre’ last month and were wondering what could have happened there. It definitely was done with malice and the perpetrators put a lot of time and energy into its destruction.

Death of American pilgrim in Castromaior today

Wow - I was just there two days ago. It is a pretty steep climb - suppose that aided in the defense of the Iron Age hill fort. Rest in peace

    Best route into Burgos

There are yellow arrows but not enough to rely on them alone. We used the Wise Pilgrim app which has the river route on its map - turn location sharing on for the app and you can easily navigate the river route without getting lost as it always will show your real time location in relation to...

Hiking up O Cebreiro in the Rain

We just climbed from Astorga to Foncebadón yesterday and trail conditions were awful from Rabanal to Foncebadón. Besides the heavy snow falling - once you get 2 km outside Rabanal the trail becomes a full on stream and is completely flooded in huge puddles and ankle deep mud. No way not to get...

    Long sleeve sun safe top

My favorite is the Sahara shirt from REI. It’s SPF 50, has a hood and thumb holes so it’s like wearing sun gloves. I wore it every day for the 1st two weeks of my Camino and kept me cool as could be in the sun and dried quickly after washing. My mom wore one too.

Left luggage service at all Correos offices

I haven’t tried the currency exchange service but was in a Correos location this week and saw a sign announcing that Santander bank services would now be offered in all Correos so Santander is who the currency exchanges are run through.

    Shout out to Jacotrans!

We just had a similar heart warming experience with NCS Equipajes. We got to Atapuerca and our room reservation fell through and the owner of the place we ended up staying would only take cash which we were short on. I was $0.13 short of the 6 euros I needed to put in the envelope attached to...

    Keeping biologics (Amgevita/Humira) cold

I'm trying bring a similar medication - Ozempic. The manufacturer says after first use a pen can be stored at room temp (59°F to 86°F) for up to 56 days. But I too want to be there 3 months - so would need to keep my 2nd pen refrigerated at 36°F to 46°F until I first use it. I was at REI...

    Keeping biologics (Amgevita/Humira) cold

Hi J - have you walked the Camino carrying the 4ALLFAMILY VOYAGER (USB LID battery charged model) ? I am starting the CF on Friday and am worried about how I will realistically keep it from getting wet and breaking in the rain. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!
