When I passed there in October last year, there was a single building. A small church off to one side. Sort of "quaint", not old. It was very Roman Catholic, and securely locked. Even if something is available there, it will be a mass, not a communion.
I can't directly answer the question, but one thing I do know. Make a booking promptly! Both are very popular, and it is a long way St J PdeP to Roncesvalles in one day!
I did the CF in the fall last year. Like you, I wanted light, so I took no nightwear. Next day's clothes works really well. You do NOT need a sleeping bag. I took a thickish all cotton sleeping bag liner, and it was brilliant. On the couple of high country cold nights that I struck, the...
I did the whole CF Sept-October last year, from New Zealand. 1/ Pants. Hiking shops have long pants with zip off legs. Brilliant, and one is all you need. But I did take boxer shorts for when laundering the main pants, and as emergency underpants. 2/ Water. ALL tap water in Spain is safe. Buy...
Hi Sarah. Yes, from the deep south is a problem. I am a drivable distance from Auckland. The lovely Alsa coach from Santiago to Madrid is daily, and for 660 kms, well priced at about €65. Just make sure you get off in Madrd at the 2nd stop, not Atocha! Because Roncesvalles has only a municiple...
Interesting, thank you. I did not say so in my first comment, but I booked through an American site called CheapOAir (worth a checkout). They found me an Auckland to Paris amazing deal that worked well. My return via spending time in Israel, was destroyed by the war. Too complicated for here...
Hi Sarah. I have recently returned from the whole CF. 4K sounds very high. What are your arrival and departure points? Did you book through Webjet? St Jean Pied de Port is a delightful medieval town and needs a minimum of two nights. Don't attempt Roncesvalles in one day. Use Express Bourricot's...
During covid, I dreamed up doing something grand for my 80th (on Oct 12 this year 2023) and knocking a biggie off my bucket list. What better than the El Camino? From St Jean PdeP all the way. Arrived 21 Oct. The big 80 happened in Villafranca. All very wonderful. I met 3 who were 80 or over...
As someone who has just finished the CF, my answers are: A marvelous invention is pants with zip off legs. That is all I took. Cold morning, legs on until the heat gets up. Then sit down for a moment, unzip the legs, and you are on your way. Shoes: I had a near new pair of Salomon. Not boots...
When I took my folder full of stamps thru the Santiago Pilgrim Office last week, they had a quick look, but certainly did NOT count them to make sure I had "every one". As for two stamps per day after Sarria, that only applies to those who start at the 100km mark. So, I am pleased to say; no...
As one who has just finished the whole Camino Frances, and had my 80th birthday half way across, I would like to say:
The CF from Roncesvalles is good.
I would not encourage St Jean PdeP to Roncesvalles.
The portion much later that has the Crux de Ferro (Cross of Iron), which is the highest...
My experience is Spain only, but worth recounting I think. I bought and had fitted an Orange sim card. It worked well, but I soon had a bill to pay! I found that my calls to outside Europe (I am from New Zealand) cost big time. (Calls inside Europe, free.) Now my NZ folk call me on WhatsApp, and...
Three weeks ago I landed in Paris and, having had a good previous experience with Orange, went to their big store on Plaza de la Republique. Because I was going to Spain to hike the Camino, I needed assurance that the card I bought and had them fit, would work in Spain. I was assured it...
If you are using booking. , good because I love them. But since walking the CF these last 3 weeks, I am amazed to find that dozens of albergues do not list on booking! Just no interest in doing so.
From a Kiwi here now, 3 weeks into the Camino Frances, all I can say is; err on the side of caution. Be early at your checkins! Those airlines don't wait. Incidently, I came via San Francisco, and nearly blew my trip by not having a US transit visa when checking in in Auckland. $US22, and...
A cynic would reply "How long is a piece of string." But this serious question needs a serious reply. From New Zealand 🇳🇿, I book through a site called CheapOAir. I load my details, but not book. Over the next week or two, as I check, flight offers change dramatically. I settled on a flight...
I am currently day 16 on the C Frances. I brought a thickish cotton sleeping bag liner only. It is absolutely adequate. Most pilgrims have a sleeping bag, but they are too hot in these warm albergues. So they open the bags and use them as quilts, or sometimes just lie on top. A bag is an...
Day 16 on the Camino Frances, from NZ. Big problem for me too, bumping into people for the first few days. Now I stay with the right side on paths, and it works. As for walking on the roads, our logic says: Face the oncoming traffic. We are right, they are wrong, even though so many on the...
