My comprehensive and honest packing list!

or - Confessions of a somewhat vain pilgrim Hi all - I read a lot of packing lists when I was preparing for the camino, but none of them seemed quite as long as mine ended up being once I'd itemised every single thing, weighed it and added it to my spreadsheet! I thought my list might be of...

What time of year is best?

I absolutely loved walking mid April to mid May (this year). The spring flowers were amazing and the weather was mostly cool or cold, with only a couple of nasty hot days towards the end. Like you, I'm really not a hot weather person, and I found on those couple of days that the hot weather...

LIVE from the Camino Hola from Leon!

Hi everyone! I´m writing now from Leon, just over half-way through my Camino. In many ways, the Camino has been exactly what I expected... you know, a *lot* of walking... enjoying the company of other pilgrims (...most of the time)... some lovely albergues and other not-so-lovely ones.... plenty...

    Hotel in Madrid

I've booked a room in the Palacio de Tepa for my last night in Spain. Pretty expensive but it looks beautiful - I love the wooden ceilings! I'll report back again after my stay! http://www.nh-hotels.com/nh/en/hotels/s ... ce=adwords

    Persevering

Precisely four weeks from now I will be on the plane to Espana, and boy am I excited! BUT! I've a little niggling concern! Positivity doesn’t come naturally to me and I usually have to put a fair whack of effort into arguing myself into an optimistic and not-too-critical state of mind. So...

    Brushing up on your Spanish

I will look this one up too, it sounds interesting! I'm leaving from Roncesvalles (or possibly SJPP) on April 21!! So excited!!! :) C

    Brushing up on your Spanish

I totally agree on that Rob, I've had a grand old time reading Harry Potter in Spanish translation!! (My favourite thing is that Mad-Eye Moody becomes "Ojo-loco"!!)

    Walking at night... ??

Wow, thank you all so much for your thoughts especially for the suggested legs and stories from those of you who have done this. Sagalout, I think I'm pretty sold based on your experience! I think I'll just see how I go and if I *do* happen to find myself with a good companion (this is probably...

    Walking at night... ??

So I'm an enormous night-owl and I was thinking it could be lovely to walk a little of the camino overnight - perhaps some of the meseta? Has anyone done this? Is it feasible? Is it safe? Can you see the stars beautifully or is Spain too built-up for that anyhow?

    Pack weight question no. 987456

Thanks everyone for your replies - and I’m not just saying that because I basically got the answer I was hoping for! It is so generous the way experienced people on this forum put time into helping newbies like me and I truly appreciate it… Arn, I don’t plan on cutting the end off my toothbrush...

    Brushing up on your Spanish

Hola amigos, I've just started breaking in my boots and have been going for lots of lovely long training walks around Melbourne. I also figured it was about time to start brushing up on my fairly good but rusty Spanish. I've hit upon a fun and efficient way of combining the two activities so I...

    Pack weight question no. 987456

Hi all! It's still a couple of months out from my departure but I've acquired almost all of my gear, weighed it and entered it into a spreadsheet (I think I got this idea from Sillydoll?). My total weight (with estimates for a few items, but likely to be accurate) including absolutely...

To camera or not to camera

Hmm. I'm pretty sure I saw you somewhere else around these parts talking about lugging all manner of photographic equipment around with you! I'm thinking you might be afflicted with the same photography obsession that has struck a few of my close friends and family... so I'm going to take your...

To camera or not to camera

I like this idea very much Abbeydore. If only I could draw above a second-grade level! ;)

To camera or not to camera

Wow, so many responses! Thank you all for your stories and suggestions. Falcon, I love your little piece of wisdom that it's how little not how much you need. I think perhaps I'll reconsider the camera question when I've gotten everything I *really truly* do need together and weighed it, then...

To camera or not to camera

Hola friends, I'm camino-ing in April/May next year - and have already started packing my bags, tee hee! One thing that's *not* going in my pack is a mobile phone, and I'm seriously considering skipping on the camera too. It's mainly for weight reasons (not that I won't be packing a little...

    Guitar on the Camino

I'm not walking till April/May next year but I sure hoope I run into some people with guitars - music would be a real treat for your fellow pilgrims!

Getting to SJPP from Victoria, Aus

I haven't done it yet but I have booked my tickets - I'm flying Melbourne to Barcelona on Qatar Airways via Doha. (Qatar also fly into Madrid from Melbourne and I think Sydney too) From there I can train or bus to Pamplona and bus or taxi to roncesvalles. Whee!
