OBSOLETE COVID THREAD A return to a more basic camino?

I can't remember if wifi was around in 2003 when I did my first Camino? I had a German mobile with roaming prices. I'd been in hospital most of the previous year and my wife and in-laws insisted on calling every day. When I got back my phone bill was more than I'd spent in a month on lodging...

    The Introverted Pilgrim

I enjoyed reading this and it summarises how I often feel on Caminos (and wider life)

    Vaseline on feet?

I usually put alcohol on my feet on the Camino. I must have heard it from someone back in 2003 - when I did my first one. It does seem to protect against blisters but not sure if it good for my feet!

    Is the Olvidado for you?

Thank you Laurie. A really interesting summary. I have chickened out at the last moment and am doing 2 weeks on the Norte from tomorrow. The reasons - much the ones you suggest above and the fact that I have ended up with only 2 weeks. I will do it, just not this year. Buen camino Andrew

Off the beat tracks, alone with myself

Camino Olvidado - Bilbao to Ponferrada, 500km, 20 days +/-. From all I've read unlikely to meet more than one or two pilgrims in the time

LIVE from the Camino Alun and Laurie on the Olvidado

I am planning to start from probably just outside Bilbao on 10 or 11 July. Anyone else around? Laurie - any other pilgrims around on your Camino? I love your descriptions and stories.

LIVE from the Camino Camino Olvidado - 2019 Guide in English

Thank you As. I plan to set off on 10 Or 11 July. Any chance you could post a copy here? CSJ are not always the quickest at replying. Thanks. Andrew

    Camino Lebaniego/Vadiniense!

Hi all I did the Lebaniego in 2016. It was the 'new' way and only about 5 km of road walking if I remember right and even that was a rural road with stunning scenery. Andrew

Hot off the presses — Guide 2019

Hi again! My (Spanish) wife is a translator and I am sure she’d be willing to help if there were any bits of the Spanish you wanted a second opinion on. Just an offer in case. Andrew

Beautifully expressed Laurie (as your posts always are). Thank you

Four in one / make your own Camino

Hi. It did come over as a bit challenging, yes. But anyway in response to your questions 1. Yes 2. Yes. 3. No 4. No. The posts probably come from people wanting to do routes that fit into their personal circumstances and avoid crowds too. Regards

Four in one / make your own Camino

Thanks Laurie and Mike. I take your point Lauri re 'unwalked halves' and it would bother me in a way! I loved the Lebaniego and Salvador. It depends mainly on time - the Olvidado plus Invierno is probably about 4 weeks and I doubt I can get that long off work. I think what you say is logical...

Four in one / make your own Camino

Hi Thinking of making my “own” route - Lebaniego - Vadiniense till Cistierna, onto the Olvidado, then the Invierno. Looks like 2+5+7+9=23 days approx. Has anyone done this? Or maybe start start the Olvidado in La Robla, a day from Leon? Or start somewhere a few days into the Olvidado - maybe...

    4-in-one camino, is it doable?

I agree with I agree re the Salvador - a really beautiful 5 days. I also did the detour from Lugo to San Salvador in 2013 (I didn't know it had a name), a crazy unforgettable 52km in the day

    Scenery on the Invierno

Many thanks Annie. Really impressive photos. I live in Thailand so it "shocks" me a bit to see how wintry it looks in April still! :). I did not expect those big hills in Galicia. If you read Spanish there is an Award winning Spanish novel from 2016 set in Ribeira Sacra, which really evokes the...

    Scenery on the Invierno

Hi everyone I see a lot of people recommending the Invierno. What is the scenery like? From the photos I have seen , it isn’t as attractive as the Primitivo or Salvador but maybe I’ve not seen the good photos? Can anyone advise? Tia Andrew

    Crime along the VDLP?

Many thanks for all the replies here - all really helpful. Yes, I guess one's pace of 14 years ago may not be the same as now :). (Apologies for the typos in my last post which were caused by a mixture of jet lag and typing on my phone). I really hope I can 'get' 6 weeks or so for this camino.

    Crime along the VDLP?

Hi all A funny coincidence as I had been planning to ask too. 2 incidents in 5 years isn't bad though I'm sure it was unpleasant was those concerned. If I may just add/ask people who have done it: - the guides say about 36 days including the Sanabres. Is that about right? ( I did the francés in...
