Heading out on the Primitivo from Oviedo at the start of May.
The wife won't entertain the idea of an albergue (she's a bit of a diva) and to be honest I don't like the idea of being told what time to go to bed.
So we're doing pensions/hotels all the way. Booked about half of them including...
Any suggestion in regards of which one to choose to sleep the night between these?
Vila do Conde/Povoa de Varzim
Marinhas/Esposende
Caminha/A Guarda
Mougas/Baiona
Did this route in 2013, I think Vila do Conde and Povoa de Varzim are pretty much of a muchness just a typical coastal strip.
If...
Funnily enough I started at Povoa de Varzim when I did the Portuguese Coastal in 2013.
It saves you a day if you are pushed for time as it's at the northern end of the Porto metro-system which I presume is why you're doing it?
Took the more "traditional" route up the coast via...
Did the coastal last September.
Baiona to Vigo waymarking is patchy got "lost" a couple of times and eventually just followed the main road into the City.
Vigo to Redondela is fine one you find the Rúa Urzaiz (it's at the side of the large Corte Ingles department store in the centre). Just...
We were meant to!
Beware that no ferries run on Mondays between Caminha and La Guarda. Ended up shelling out 30 euros for a cab across the border from ferry station to ferry station (which then entailed a 4km hike back uphill into La Guarda). It would have only been 90c on the ferry.
From your...
Did the coastal route in early September last year.
Started at Povoa de Varzim (northernmost stop on the Porto metro line).
Days were
Povoa de Varzim to Esposende
Esposende to Viana de Castelo
Viano de Castelo to Caminha
Caminha to Oia
Oia to Baiona
Baiona to Vigo
Vigo to Redondela
Redondela to...
None booked in advance apart from Povoa, just walked up on the day. In hindsight I would book in advance for Santiago though. Bit of a rush round early evening to find somewhere.
Povoa de Varzim Hotel Luso Brasileiro (Booked 45 euros B&B)
http://www.hotellusobrasileiro.pt/en/
Esposende Hotel Estalagem do Zende (40 euros B&B)
Wouldn't bother with this gaff again. Bit dingy. The albergue at Marinhas 4km or so down the road looked ok.
Shortage of budget...
Now in vigo, feet are shot to bits but I believe I'm going to make it!
Only two things to report.
1. Double check Caminha to La Garda ferry times. We got caught out on Monday. No ferries all day, ended up paying 30 euros for a cab round.
2. There have been some big forest fires near Oia, I...
Musicman, will be walking Esposende to Viana de Castelo on Saturday so keep an eye out for us and I'll do likewise.
Eze, don't get back 'til the 22/9 so I won't be blogging 'til then. However, if I come across any vital info (bridge closures, ferry cancellations etc.) I will post them on this...
Me and the better half are striking out to Santiago starting in Povoa de Varzim this coming Friday.
I have researched the walk reasonably well and downloaded maps from the excellent Caminador site.
Stopping in Esposende - Viana de Castelo - Caminha - Oia - Having a day's RnR on Las Islas Cies...

Looking forward to your write-up, the more detailed route info the better.

Hi Rickster,
Fairly detailed map of the route from Vila de Conde to Caminha available to download here:

Walking the same route myself in September so I hope the waymarkings are a little clearer by then.
Hi BCRockies.
There's no set or correct way to do the Camino. Some people start from the Cathedral in Oporto, some take the metro to Mercado in Matosinhos and walk up the coast to Vila do Conde spend the night there before cutting inland to Rates or Barcelos.
I was just suggesting another...
Rather than start in Matosinhos, why don't you take the metro up to Santa Clara (it's the stop before Vila do Conde) and start your walk there?
Approximately 12.5 kms walk and a nice way to ease yourself into the Camino.
