    Graffiti on the Frances

I actually agree that some graffiti in cities is extremely artistic - the Berlin Wall would be a typical example! But stupid scrawls like ‘Dylan loves Lisa 2018’ gets up my nose and is pure defacement! And there is so much of this type of stuff on the waymarkers - we all love people but do we...

    Graffiti on the Frances

This is probably an old chestnut but why do people (I won’t call them pilgrims) insist on putting stupid graffiti messages on the way markers on the Camino Frances. Having joined the Frances yesterday at Arzua from the ‘unspoilt’ Del Norte I was dismayed at all the graffiti and litter along this...

Perhaps the Nicest Albergue You Will Ever Find

I had exactly the same experience in Xabarin - by far the best albergue I stayed in on the Camino del Norte. I stayed there two weeks ago and was delighted with everything! A lovely welcoming spotlessly clean albergue!!

I'm walking the Way with no crowds at all...

I will be walking the Le Puy route this September (my third Camino route - previously 2 times on Frances) and I have never booked ahead and hope not to as I enjoy the freedom of choosing where and when to stop as the journey takes me! I hope I'm not wrong!

LIVE from the Camino Warning - you may need to book ahead

Last year I walked the CF in September for the second time when it was very busy - I stayed between stages (Brierley stages) and had no problem with beds, I never booked forward and ended up meeting some lovely hospitaleros in smaller villages - worth considering when the route is busy

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Thanks Alwyn - hope you're enjoying it! I will probably decide day to day on stopping point, I usually do but am hoping there won't be too much pressure on beds in September. If there is then I guess I will phone ahead. I imagine April is a very pleasant month for walking? Best of luck! Gerry

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Hi Dermot - many thanks for your detailed reply and advice - lovely photos! I visit France a lot as I spent most of my working life in the wine business so I am really looking forward to taking some reflective time alone out on this quieter trail. I found the crowds on the Frances a little off...

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Good advice - I can appreciate that accommodation is much sparser but happy to make the call if necessary - I just enjoy the flexibility of stopping when I feel like stopping E="Kitsambler, post: 398819, member: 3210"]That won't be a problem on the Le Puy, which has one-tenth the number of...

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Many thanks - I intend to go back over the various threads on the subject and looking forward to the tranquility of the French countryside - I did find my second Camino Frances last year very crowded in parts and the scramble for beds was a little off putting - I never book forward and prefer to...

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Hi Ed and Joan - many thanks for your reply and blog link - looking forward to reading it! Was just reading up on the MiamMiamDodo book so will definitely check that one out - I speak reasonable French which is another reason for taking this route (my lack of Spanish on recent trips was slightly...

First time from Le Puy to St.Jean

Having walked the Camino Frances from SJPP to Santiago in 2014 and through to Finisterre in 2015, I'm planning to walk from Le Puy to St Jean this September. I'm having some difficulty in sourcing good guidebooks / maps and would appreciate any advice from fellow pilgrims who have made this...

What's the best day of the week to leave St Jean to avoid the congestion at the start.

Good point by Thornley re mist on the Route Napoleon - I experienced some last year but when it lifts - it's heavenly! Weather forecast is a must to check before crossing the mountains - haven't tried the Valcarlos route yet as a little put off by guidebook! I'm starting from StJean on Friday...

    SJPP to Roncesvalles

Hi Kathy - I walked the Route Napoleon end of September last year with a group of other pilgrims I had just met in SJPP and we all got there - some in 6 hours, some in 9 hours - it's not a race so set your own pace with regular breaks and you won't have a problem!Orisson is a good watering hole...
