Splurge on a hotel room if you can. Enjoy soaking in the bath, crisp bedding, big pillows, lazy mornings, tending to blisters, pack reorganising, supplies replenishing, studying your stamps, Spanish coffee (OMG I miss Spanish coffee), Rioja in Logrono, tapas in Leon and Pilgrim spotting.
Can you afford extra time? I was lucky and I could. I had resigned from my job and had a British passport so no return flight was needed for visas etc. It meant I had no time pressure at all. I could walk completely steered by my body and heart. If I was feeling awful I did a short day. If I was...
They were berghaus. They held up really well. I did need a belt, particularly as I lost weight through the weeks 🥳. I just had one small light belt that I switched onto the pair I was wearing.
I walked the same time in 2014. I had two pairs of hiking pants (one zipped into three quarters) and one pair of three quarters. I don't remember being cold (even when it snowed) but I remember being wet. Very very wet. The last week into Santiago rained and rained and then rained harder. Quick...
I did it in 2014, two days after I turned 40. I was immigrating back to South Africa after 18 years in the UK. Seemed like a fitting homage to the Europe that I had so loved. I was burnt out, overweight and suffering with depression. I needed something. I found out about the Camino and started...
I went a size up and had no problems. I met a girl who didn't and lost both her big toenails. It ended get Camino early. Depends on the shoe and the feet though I guess.
I got one of these, put my backpack in it with my poles and checked it in. That was on the way back because I had bought them in Pamplona. Buen Camino.
Looks about right for 10 days.
Things I wouldn't do the Camino again without:
- Tape to strap my feet (I religiously strapped my feet every morning. The blisters still came but they weren't so bad)
- Gators (stops sand getting in your shoes. I had this problem after the first two weeks when my...
You'll quickly realize you don't need stuff. I didn't take any luxury items (if you consider a mobile phone necessary), hell... I even posted my sunglasses back home, but when I do it again, I'll definitely take a pillow case.
I was having a particularly bad day of pain and rain and blisters (week two into my six weeks) and that day I had to stop every kilometer to get the stones out of my shoes. An Australian Angel I had never met before nor ever saw again gave me his gaitors. I thanked him every single day for the...
I would start in St Jean and walk as you want, stop when you want, stay where you want, walk with who you want. Stop and smell the roses. The goal is not Santiago imho... it's experiencing the million wonderful things along The Way. Buen Camino.
I lost 15 lbs on the Camino and I ate whatever I thought my body needed, and boy did it need a beer or two before dinner every night ;-) I could also take my trousers off without undoing the button by the end... woohoo! I've since lost another 19 lbs. The Camino was the kickstart I needed...
I have a hip problem which I thought would be an issue. Walking with poles ensured I engaged my core muscles whilst walking and my hip didn't give me one iota of a problem the whole 700+ kms. I swear by them. Know how to use them properly though. I saw so many people using them badly to a point...
Worth it! You can probably get it cheaper if you shopped around. I'd never seen it before and saw it in a Camino shop in Pamplona. Really glad I bought it.
I bought one of these in Pamplona. Best thing ever! I attached it to a 1.5 litre Vittel bottle which went in a pouch on the side of my pack. Didn't have to take the pack off to drink. Filled it up at fountains. Replaced the bottle every now and then. Didn't have to worry with Camelback bladders...
I did Orisson to Roncesvalles in 30-40m visibility. Was completely on my own for most of the day until the St Jean front runners caught up and overtook. It was quite simply one of the most serene and beautiful days of my life. I think about it often.
