Backup Footwear - Open or Closed sandals?

I took a pair of Keens with me and am pleased I did. They are a little heavy but they have a few benefits. In Santa Domingo we went out to a flash restaurant and was able to wear the keens with socks. Dark socks and dark Keens - quite OK. The Keens are also handy on either side of the...

    Blister Prevention and Foot Care

My brother is an adventure guide. His suggestion was to stop the instant you feel a hot spot and tape over it. Use a really stick tape. You'll find Leukotype or similar work. You might end up with a lot of tape and it looks terrible but it works. Avoiding blisters is the best plan

Buying gear along Camino vs locally at home

We shopped at Campsaver and Sierra before we left. These places are cheaper than anywhere in Australia almost across the board. I saw some shops on our trip. There was one in Pamplona but the range was limited and it was really good stuff but expensive. I'd recommend buying before you go.

I am planning to walk from SJPP I live in australia and would like someone to walk with me

We walked in October and it was really nice. Weather was warm but not too warm and it was never really cold either. There were not too many people around so we never had any trouble getting into alberques or other accomodation.

    Is our backpack big enough

I think the size is fine - my wife and I both carried 35l packs but we both agreed we'd take the bigger ones next time just leave them half empty. The bigger packs tend to have a top and bottom compartment so you don't need to unpack everything every time. I hate stuff hanging off the pack so...

    A contrarians view on packing

There are purpose designed bags but they are expensive. If you plan on floating your bag across a river crossing there is no substitute. However for keeping your stuff dry in the rain a heavy duty garbage bag will be fine.

    A contrarians view on packing

My second observation is that the poster provided almost no context that might really help others in interpreting the advice. What season did they walk in (one assumes if they have just finished and walked from SJPP, they started in late September)? Did it rain? Much? How big are they - what was...

    A contrarians view on packing

II'm not including what you are wearing. I'm saying one pair of socks on and one pair in the pack. Same for underpants. I walked the two cold days in shorts with thermals on underneath - not high fashion but comfortable.

    A contrarians view on packing

Thanks for the responses. Re the Alberque windows - everywhere we stayed in had closed windows. It was freezing at Roncelvalles and I slept on my sleeping bag. The others were all the same. re Packsize The packs we took required careful packing everyday. It was a pain in the butt -...

    A contrarians view on packing

I've just finished 350kms of the Camino de Santiago from St John Pied Port finishing in Burgos. Here is my take on what to take and not to take. Sleeping Bags: Take a liner and don't bother with a sleeping bag. Despite some cold weather we sweltered in the Alberques every night. Pack 20...
