Two profound events in 2016: My Mother passed, and soon after I lost my job after a long and tortuous campaign to get me to quit. I needed to step off the grid and process things. I'd had never hiked, but was in reasonable shape, so bought some boots, a backpack and a plane ticket and off I...
I've seen people of color on each of 3 Camino's. The most memorable was on CF in 2016, - a lady barrister from London with a booming voice and very strong, very loud opinions that you couldn't hide from. She seemed to enjoy attention, while her teenaged kids kept a lower profile.
Maybe we'll see you on CP. We're starting Oct 4th from Valenca. We're a trio from Australia, and USA, and all experienced some major health issues, so electing to do shorter more manageable legs, - (about 15km / day) and go easy. Just happy to be out there enjoying life and making new...
The therapeutic value - The Camino provides the perfect platform to get away from the grid, uncoil, purge and compartmentalize, and ultimately free up the mind and senses to fully appreciate the good, the pure and the positive.
Osprey is a great choice, but make sure it's the right size and fitted correctly to you. Every year they come out with a new and useful technology update, so often there's value in buying new if you can.
Buen Camino!
For those planning the Camino for Mid-September to Mid-October there will likely be accommodation challenges too. Great to see SJPDP opening up the fire station in a pinch, but with an upward trend in pilgrim numbers it might suggest a more robust or enterprising solution is needed to manage...
How much "cash on-hand" was a good question to ask. If you budget for +/- $60 a day and carry no more than a weeks cash you will be in a good spot. I found that when I had $1000 or more in cash I was on guard day and night. Much better to have $300 - $400 on hand and draw more from an ATM...
Nacama Hostel in Pontevedra has not responded to e-mail, phone, or WhatsApp requests for a booking confirmation. Any ideas why they might be difficult to reach?
Kudo's for putting it out there. I had the same experience in 2016, - cost me about 100 Euro's to do it alone back then, but I would have jumped at the chance to share. Good luck, and Buen Camino!
I made one ATM withdrawal a week of about 400 - 500 euros, and it provided what I needed without having to stress over carrying too much cash. Notify your bank or Credit Union in advance with dates of travel or they might stop a foreign transaction and freeze the card for security reasons.
It's an inconvenience, and probably one of many adverse conditions you will experience in the coming weeks. A few days on the Camino will help you manage that anxiety.
Buen Camino!
My wife and I were hungry with anticipation to see Camino Skies when we picked up a flyer in our alberge in Estella last October. As luck would have it, we met some Kiwi's on the trail that were at the original screening, so we ordered the CD on the strength of their enthusiasm. Perhaps our...
