I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and got a lot of great info. See thread 'Breaking Up the Walk from Porto to Vila do Conde' https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/breaking-up-the-walk-from-porto-to-vila-do-conde.86800/
Thanks to everyone for the advice! We decided that we'll walk from Porto to Angeiras, staying that night at the place @Albertinho recommended. The next day we go on to Vila do Conde. It'll be a short walking day but we do want to see the town.
From there we're heading east to the Central...
Thanks, we have been curious about the terrain / walking surfaces on some parts of the Português. Did you walk all the way to Rates from Labruge? Or stay a night in Vila do Conde?
Oh, no, that's not what I meant (Porto to Vila do Conde). I'm curious specifically about the 23 KM stretch between Matosinhos and Vila do Conde (which we'd been considering as our first day). Thank you for your response, I appreciate hearing your experience.
Thank you for your thoughtful notes! An idea about your hospitality question... in the US some people are Trail Angels for those hiking The Pacific Crest, The Continental Divide, and Appalachian Trails. (Leaving water & snacks at rest stops, offering rides into town for shopping, laundry or...
Interesting idea - seems this allows for a warm up, a sense of total* completion of the Camino Português, and one more night in the city.
From Matosinhos, did you then walk all the way to Vila do Conde? (@MilenaS same question for you.)
*Until this set of advice we'd been thinking to skip...
You're the second person to advise that Matosinhos to Vila do Conde is an easy walk. (Someone in our local FB page also mentioned that.) It really helps to have your input!
Thanks, I'll look into the option of the Sé cathedral to Angeiras. Yes, we're connecting to the Central after Vila do Conde.
And thanks for the advice about Casa Fernanda. She has such a great reputation!
Looking for segmenting advice on the Portuguese Costal between Porto and Vila do Conde. We originally considered starting in Matosinhos walking straight to Vila do Conde. That's ~23 KM. On paper this feels like a long first day (for us). We also thought of leaving from Foz do Douro to Labruge...
Congratulations! I'm definitely following, my husband and I want to walk this route next June. Just received our Wise Pilgrim Guide yesterday in the mail! 😁
We wouldn't skip Porto as a destination, we love it! Just wanting to avoid the dangerous exit route we'd heard about (and now understand is only if we were starting the Central route directly from Porto).
Thank you, all good input. I read a post under "Live From The Camino" from a woman walking the Camino português (Central). She described the same thing in terms of dangerous roads. I know there will be times we have to be on roads, but having had a bad experience here at home, we're hoping to...
The interviewee described this part of this route as being right on the road/highway: he feared being hit several times and experienced trucks' side mirrors swishing past his ear.
I'll look into the route, maybe he wasn't walking the path you've outlined.
Thanks all - I'll look into Matosinhos. I did find the episode on Camino Cafe, the interview was with a gent named Steve Walther. He'd recommended starting in São Miguel de Arcos, which is about 30 KM due North of Porto.
Hello, my husband and I plan to walk the Camino português in late June 2024. I heard someone interviewed on the Camino Cafe podcast who had started in a town outside of Porto (San Miguel de [something] if I recall correctly). I can't find the episode. Does anyone know? We specifically want to...
