    Christmas 2023 pilgrims, gather here!

I start 3 January from SJPP on the Frances. My 2nd winter Camino, although this one starting about 7 weeks later than the last. I expect the weather will be different. Anyway, training in full swing and looking forward to it.

Religious, doubter, seeker, atheist, don't care, tourist, or whatever? Why are you walking?

I still dont know. I still don't care. I'm just glad I did.

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2021?

Lots of open, flat country which is green after recent rains and a small town every 20kms or so as you follow an old railway line. I must admit to having a pie at the Pie Shop shown before we started - it felt an appropriate way to kick things off.

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2021?

I just finished a 3 day, 55km hike in SE Queensland. First time since late 2017 Camino I have broken out the full backpack and lumped 11kgs of gear (we thought camping would be a good idea!) as its been day packs these past few years. Day 1 (20kms) was brutal in 30 degree heat. Easy to forget...

What 'Camino' Food do you Now eat at Home?

Wine is food so Tempranillo. Have taken to Rioja Tempranillo. In fact having a glass right now as I write this. Also bought a paella pan when I got home. Can’t quite get it right it but last few attempts an improvement. And Santiago cake.

    Camino Skies film.

I have to agree with Margaret above. I saw Camino Skies at New Farm Cinema in Brisbane with my daughter, and had to explain to her that it was not representative of 99% of people I met when walking the Camino Frances. Most are not walking due to extreme life situations like the loss of loved...

    You Tube Vlogs

I used YouTube a fair bit for research, and was thankful for the efforts of others, and their willingness to share. I did the CF in December and wanted to know how cold it looked, how much snow, how wet, what gear everyone had etc. The videos proved helpful. I just wish people would label...

Are you 70+ and still walking Caminos?

I have just passed on my hiking poles to a friend who is mid 70s and heading off in May for his 1st Camino. He is walking the Frances starting SJPP. He has come through recent knee surgery, and training well with long walks. So my poles at least are off on their 2nd Camino. I think he is a...

Best supermarket wines on the Camino...

Great OP. The forum should talk more about the wines of the Camino because it’s a highlight. I love my wines, but have to confess of not having tasted many Spanish wines before having 5 weeks in Spain walking the Camino. In Australia at least the wines of Italy and France are more readily...

    Vegan

Maybe it was the time of year we walked (December) but it was very hard to get enough vegetables in our diet. I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but by the end of the CF I could have killed for a vegetable. We could see vegetables growing, so someone must be eating them, but they certainly...

St Patrick's Way - Pilgrims Walk in Ireland?

There would be thousands of Australians just looking for an excuse to visit the land of our ancestors. My family hails from County Caven yet I have never been to Ireland. Doing a pilgrimage or long through walk would be another great excuse to pack the bags and get over there.

    Calm Down

I laugh (now) at all the anxieties I had planning to go, and how much I over-thought everything. Now having done the CF it would literally take me 15 minutes to pack and I would just go with the flow. I would know there is an Albergues somewhere ahead, I wouldn’t starve, plenty of places to...

Camino in winter: which route is warmer?

Just finished the Camino Frances. 13 Nov to 17 Dec 2017. SJPP to Compostela. I know every year is different but it wasn’t as cold as I thought it might be. Daytime temps 2-10 degrees, most days sunny (or at least not raining) and coldest morning minus 6 degrees coming out of Burgos. Snow in...
