Though from what I’ve read, research doesn’t back the ‘showers cause blisters’ belief at all. And correlation (I had a shower in the morning and I got a blister so it must be due to the shower…) isn’t the same as causation (I tripped and hit my arm so got a cut)!
I don’t like the phrase the Camino provides - sounds akin to ‘magic happens’ stickers on car windscreens! Or ‘unicorns are real!’.
However, the original post seems like quite an over reaction to a non-issue - particularly given the examples the OP gives.
OP - did these situations actually...
Yes, that was my experience with dinners too in 2023. And I don’t even have social anxiety!
I think it was largely because I’m quite a fast walker so I didn’t stick with people I met initially or on the way. Also, early on, I changed my SIM card/phone number.
I also was never sure where...
Cafes/bars often use UHT (long life) milk - which has an unpleasant taste and smell to me - instead of fresh milk.
So I tended to carry teabags with me and made my own tea with fresh milk - using the albergue microwave to heat the water.
I easily bought normal tea bags in supermarkets in the...
As a fellow Kiwi (I assume) I’m surprised you haven’t encountered head torches as they are really commonly used by NZ trampers. And it’s easy to get one with a dimmer and/or a red lamp setting. These are specifically designed not to disturb other people or wild life.
I guess you haven’t done much overnight back country hiking? Headlamps with a red lamp setting are very common and they do not disturb others or ‘blind’ them.
That’s incorrect. Decent headlamps will have a brightness setting. I have one of those. Also good headlamps will have a red light that lights the way without blinding anyone.
I had only one bunk without a rail on the French Camino. If you book on the Booking app, then request a lower bunk in the notes. If just turning up, I suggest you try to arrive early and ask for a lower bunk then. Another option is to practice before you go - and/or have some counseling to give...
Many airlines - including Air NZ - offer the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions. Perhaps explore that to balance up the emissions you will be using to get to Spain by air.
There is a guy selling his metalwork, including metal shell necklaces. His workshop is on the main path, in the vicinity of the wine fountain. A couple of the people I was with that morning bought necklaces.
I’m a Kiwi who lives in Australia. When in NZ I call it ‘tramping’ (being out in the bush with a tent and camping stove and walking from place to place) and in Australia I call the same thing ’bushwalking’. The French Camino, at least, is neither tramping or bushwalking - it’s definitely walking.
Can you change your train ticket? When I went ( April this year), I got a morning train from Montparnasse. They will probably add more train schedules closer to the time - keep an eye out.
I haven’t been able to find the bar laundry soap in Spain - but the photos you posted might help. I am also trying to find a bar of scented soap suitable for body and hair.
