Small unexpected kindnesses on the Camino

In Aldeanueva (a town I loved) on the Via de la Plata, I asked an old woman for directions to a bar that was supposed to have Internet. It was raining at the time. The woman grabbed my hand and put it on the handle of her umbrella, so we'd both stay dry as she walked me to the bar. Much closer...

    Aiming for a record

She was looking for a running challenge, wanted to raise money for a good cause, and, like so many others, felt the pull of the Camino. Nothing wrong with that. Here's what she told me before she left:

    Aiming for a record

She did it! Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago in 9 days, 5 hours and 29 minutes. http://jennyjourney.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/she-did-it/

? when does a hard walk in Spain become a Camino

As someone else who walked from Le Puy (in my case over the course of almost twelve weeks), I agree completely with Margaret. And I'm about to walk the Via de la Plata, and I don't think my ratio of material/non-material concerns has changed much from before my first Camino, either. And I'd say...

    Reasons for walking the Camino

I wrote this up for my blog a while ago. I wouldn't have thought to list the majority of these before I walked, though. :) Why Walk the Camino de Santiago Because of the Santiagos: the saint and the city. Because of the rhythm of walking. Because of the laughter … and the tears. For the...

    Aiming for a record

I interviewed her a few weeks ago. She talked about how she feels like a pilgrim--and hopes to go back as a walker someday. http://www.pilgrimroads.com/2011/02/running-the-camino/

Upcoming Camino memoir ... by Martin Sheen and Emilio Esteve

Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez will be collaborating on a memoir called Along the Way, planned for publication around Father's Day 2012. It looks like it's mainly about their time together (filming) on the Camino. ** It won't let me change "Esteve" to "Estevez" in the title. I do know how to...

    The Movie `The Way`Martin Sheen

Re: The Movie "The Way" with MARTIN Sheen of course Nancy Frey's review seems to be the main pilgrim review. Others on this forum who've seen the movie have said they basically agree with her.

    The Way (Movie) in Dublin

Hi all, I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet here--I noticed The Way will be playing at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. So some of you lucky Irish pilgrims could have a chance to see it. I'm jealous! Anna-Marie

Itinerario inglés de Purchas his Pilgrimes

Thanks! I'll have to check that one out. I really am a total history geek. Even studied it at university.

    Uploading my pilgrim photo

Hi Beverley, 1. Click on "User control panel" at the top of the page. 2. Click the "Edit profile" tab. 3. Click "Edit avatar" on the side. 4. Use the "browse" box to find the photo. 5. Click the "Submit" button. You might have to resize the photo first--I don't know. Hope this helps...

Itinerario inglés de Purchas his Pilgrimes

Yeah, I don't know what it was like in the 17th century, but in the 12th century I'd be all for that first Camino guidebook that's found in the Codex Calixtenus, mainly because I'd prefer to avoid experiences like drinking from poisonous rivers.

    The Harry Potter/Camino connection

Definitely. :) Well, no, but Nicholas Flamel is. I'm not even a rabid Harry Potter fan. I just recognized the name and thought it was amusing.

    The Harry Potter/Camino connection

I've just discovered a missing link between Harry Potter and the Camino. Apparently, the French alchemist Nicholas Flamel walked the Camino as far as León in search of someone who could translate a manuscript (presumably written in Hebrew) for him. He found a Jewish doctor in León who...

Itinerario inglés de Purchas his Pilgrimes

Thanks! It would be neat to see what Purchas says about it in the book, though. It's one of those fun really old books full of opinions and weird spellings and f's instead of s's.

Itinerario inglés de Purchas his Pilgrimes

I was curious and looked this up. It seems Samuel Purchas wrote a five-volume series (or four volumes plus one, depending how you look at it) called "Purchas his Pilgrimes" or "Hakluytus Postumus." They're mostly about European voyages of exploration, but he writes on religious themes, and the...

    Powerpoint Presentation

Hi Michael, You can find a lot of Camino photos all over the internet, but if you'd like to use any from my blog (in my signature) tell me which you'd like and I'd be happy to send you hi-res copies. You can also do an advanced Flickr search on the Camino or related topics and check "Only...

Has your camino experience changed who you are as a person?

Platera, Sillydoll was replying to Tamtamplin's questions (in the post before hers)--and by my reading she was defending the people who walk 100km against the suggestion that they didn't have as meaningful experience as people who walked farther. She was also pointing out that the question "Who...

How to search on the Forum

Hi Ali, Someone else can probably give you more help, but here's what I'd do. Type: "site:caminodesantiago.me madrid hotel" without the quotation marks into the Google search box. That'll show you anything on this site with "Madrid" and "hotel" on it. The search seems to be set up to search a...
