Is it possible to store backpack in the 2nd Albergue?

I helped out for a few weeks at one of the popular gites. I tried to help where possible but if a pilgrim was willing to wait until 3:00 when we opened to pick it up it was not a problem to leave the bag. We would have also tried to accommodate the request to drop off a bag as long as it was...

Listening to music while on the camino

One earbud when I'm struggling at the end of the day and when I'm going to sleep to block out noise (I set the timer for it to go off in a bit when I'm asleep.

Tell me what I need to know

Lots of good advice… mine would be that you are short of time. It takes some time to get to SJPdP and you will want to spend at least two days in Santiago and need a day to get to Madrid or Paris for you return to the U.S. This would leave you about 30 days of walking. That would be ambitious...

The “new normal” isn’t necessarily bad

I too like to know where I will lay my head at the end of the day and that it allows me to frolic in the flowers. I usually book a day or two ahead when I see how my body is doing and sometimes to stay with Camino family members. HOWEVER the differences I experienced this year: 1) Lots of people...

    US ATM cards not working

I’m on the Camino Frances now with lots of Americans. No one I have encountered has had problems getting money…. Except a user error of trying to withdraw more in euros than their daily dollar allowance.

    US ATM cards not working

Most of those I have encountered with problems were trying to withdraw too much. They had forgotten that if their daily limit is $300 that €300 euros exceeds their daily limit due to the foreign exchange rate. The atm will generally just reject without telling the reason.

    Making friends on the camino

Age is irrelevant on the Camino….. except in how cranky the hips feel. I have made tremendous friends in all age groups. You will too.

Trip Travel Medical Insurance Reviews - if you ever had a claim

I haven't filed a claim, but did do a lot of research and gathering people's experience.Ultimately, because I travel a bit I ended up buying annual insurance from Allianz (that covers me anytime I am more than 100 miles from home. So some of the things I gathered when doing my research: Most...

    Cell Phone Usage

Tmobile works great. As with all services sometimes there are dead spots. A couple of things to know/remember. 1) while they don’t seem to tell you this, there is some kind of limit, that isn’t enforced, but every time I go over 30 days and don’t purchase the additional data, I get a warning...

Having painful blisters unable to walk and have 7 days left. Currently in Santiago

Great book. I have it downloaded on my kindle app. on my phone. It goes everywhere with me.

Having painful blisters unable to walk and have 7 days left. Currently in Santiago

I am unsure what the weather is like in December, but I would definitely check the weather at Finisterre/Muxia before heading there. My June-Oct experiences were totally different than my November experience when it was cold and rainy and it was so bad we couldn’t go outdoors. This could impact...

Euros and Sim card near Madrid airport.

I didn't find the SIM card to be expensive at the airport. This is what I paid recently

Euros and Sim card near Madrid airport.

Easy to get a SIM card at the Madrid airport. I usually get one at the Tech n Fly store. You can look online for the location at your arriving terminal. I believe last time, after getting my luggage I had to go upstairs to the stores before security. Even the luggage store had SIM cards.

    ATM withdrawal

L As others have said your bank has your limit (in your currency) and the bank you are withdrawing will have a limit in their currency. Years ago I could get more than 300 euro but it’s seems to be the limit now. They usually charge 5 euro for each withdrawal, so I think possibly lowering the...

    Albergues with curtains

Very few opportunities for beds with curtains…… also much more likely to be cold in October depending on where you are starting.

Does my plan for mailing some supplies ahead to myself make sense?

Yes, 9 Camino's and had never thought or needed another pair of shoes. This summer, they got very wet, the foam in the heel deteriorated and caused a massive heel blister (first one ever.) We duck taped and tried everything, but it was impossible to fix. The women in Spain evidently have small...

Having spouse join for final 100km, or meet in Santiago - I’m thinking it’s not a great idea…

I agree with what everyone has said about the difference in the physical condition of someone who has walked for a month and someone who is just beginning. Also, meeting in Sarria would require you to have a schedule. I have walked with pilgrims who were meeting their spouse in Sarria and this...

    Mint Mobile International Calling

Haven’t used mint mobile but did use t-mobile this past October. Basically, data and texting were free, but calls to US numbers still had a small cost. I was only gone a month and did get notified upon my return that I had exceeded my international usage that was supposed to be less than 50% of...
