    Showers

Now you can make an Eton Mess (confess), have some Oxford College (knowledge) but I cannot for the life of me June until September what a Cambridge refers to… probably for the string (vest) 😉

    Showers

I remember a night in the old association Albergue in Irun. A very clear notice in multiple languages stated “No Morning Showers!” I was awoken at about 4:00 by the overnighting volunteer thumping on the shower room door. When the occupant emerged the volunteer thundered “No! Morning! Showers!”...

    The Camino will provide?

I remember the “10 penny Man”. He harried the holidaymakers on Brighton seafront through the 1970’s and 80’s. All he ever asked for was “10p, just 10p man?” Bought a very nice house in Rottingdean in the 1990’s and retired

    The Camino will provide?

Ah, Camino. Such a rich world: thieves and con-artists; incompetents and fools; bandits and the band-of-brothers, even, sometimes, the wise… Barreling through the dust to salvation (or a nice certificate): giving and receiving as the universe unfolds. Does anyone go to the bones anymore or is it...

    Credentials “stamps”

Well, you could have got a stamp from the train/bus station, any open bar, Guardia Civil post: the list is endless. Make sure you get a stamp at your accommodation tonight and put a little effort into collecting more and you’ll get your compo thing

    Wisepilgrim app

I haven’t got a copy of Wise Pilgrim’s current iteration of the app and so I’ve no idea what the variance you’re referring to is. I do know what my daily walking limit is and so usually target something around 2/3rds of that. I like margins. I do know that if I walk over Truleigh Hill and the...

    Wisepilgrim app

Does it really matter? Neither St Jean nor Santiago are moving so the distance between them never changes (geologists with an obsession for tectonic drift need not respond). The distance walked by pilgrims will vary considerably depending on their navigational skills, inclination to diversion...

    Cancelling Camino - Soliciting Advice

Camino is a journey not a competition. Take a serious look at your pack weight, unless you’re including water and lunch that’s heavy for a short hike in civilized country. I can do that sort of distance and elevation in your timescale but I usually choose not to. 8 hours, a decent lunch...

    Cancelling Camino - Soliciting Advice

Hmm. 20k hike and 360m ( I find it best to use only one scale of measurement) of elevation gain and, presumably 360m of descent which is usually harder on the legs than the ascent. That’s a pretty challenging hike. How long did it take? How many bar breaks did you take? How much weight were...

How to get QR Code onto Wikiloc App

Probably best to seek your answer here: https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-navigation-app

BBC "Pilgrimage" series 6 - North Wales Pilgrim Way

I love these self categorisations. Now all the Beeb need to track down is a lapsed atheist, a couple of animists and a committed unbeliever…

    Water, water...

I drink a litre between getting up, using the ablutions, remembering who I am and what it is I’m trying to achieve and setting boot to tarmac (other surfaces may be available). On the Frances, with a couple of exceptions, I’ll carry 500ml, drink (that’s the important bit) and refill at any...

What do you wish you had worried less about?

During my earliest trips to Spain I mostly worried about any encounter with the Guardia Civil. In later visits my biggest worry was the time constraints I faced. Getting out of the woods and back on the tree in time was always a bit of a bugger. On Camino my only worry lately has been being...

Buen Camino @annakappa. May your road be straight ❤️

    Bar Etiquette

It may seem odd but in rural areas and the smaller bars it is customary to offer a general salutation as you enter: “ ¡Buenos días! /Tardes” will do. Same with the bartender, a greeting before ordering “Buenas, Una Cerveza” @trecile beat me to the mouse 😉

    Ordering beer in Spain

Want to have even more fun? Depending on where you are in the beloved country a request for a Cerveza will get you a bottle of beer. A Caña will get you a glass of draught and a “cerveza de griffo” will get you a Caña, jarra or even a genuine “English” pint. Smiling and pointing works too 😉

    Camino certificate

Will you have time to visit and venerate the shrine of Santiago?

I’ve been in a relationship with Camino since 2012. Still together 👍

    When should I stop training?

If you have been hiking regularly and are not experiencing any fatigue or discomfort it’s unlikely that your body has any recuperation or recovery needs. I stopped training for hiking somewhen in the 1970’s but I walk perhaps 5 miles a day everyday and between 10 and 15 miles once or twice a...

    Shower/bathroom etiquette in the albergues?

There is a custom of behaviour in much of Europe that is best described as a “custody of the eyes”. You do not look and you do not see. It’s a custom with deep, deep roots. Think “Susanna and the Elders”, Peeping Tom, the story of Siproites. These stories are intrinsic to societies where the...
