I have fond memory of being still a good way from Los Arcos on a very hot day, probably 2014, when an energetic small dog bounded up the track. He ran well past us and I had the idea that he had been sent to check out how many pilgrims were still on the track, en route to "his" albergue. I'm not...
"And, of course, there were those rocky cliffs - again on the Francés - into which were carved those fascinating homes. A quick look on Google is not helping me with their location, but I think they were in the vicinity of Atapuerca"
Nájera perhaps?
47 years for us and dealing with another testing time at the moment. We walked our first Camino from Roncesvalles to SdC to celebrate (among other reasons) our 40th in 2013. Thank you, Michael B for the comparison with long distance pilgrimage; spot on! Good luck with your project, Rachael!
Nájera, Mesón El Buen Yantar, Calle Mártires, 19. Near Albergue Nido de Cigueña. Delicious sopa de garbanzos, bacalao y espinacas (chick peas, cod, spinach); wonderful cheese flan made with mascarpone; all locals, apart from us.
Thanks for the ID; tooks pics in 2014 but was unsuccessful in trying to name. I tried a berry but it tasted horrible and I got rid of it very speedily!

If this link works, then you have all the info you need about possible stopping places; if not then put "albergues-on-the-camino" in the Search box.
Absolutely! I find it can be quite a chore to walk already well-known routes from home and spend time trying to find new variations. On Camino, no problem, because a large part of the fun is walking into the unknown. Even when we walked again, the days were interesting, as we mainly stopped in...
ALL our regular bills are paid by "Direct Debit" (UK), whether we're at home or away. I presume the same sort of system exists elsewhere? I wouldn't want to log on to bank account when on Camino re security issues.
I was surprised to hear from 2 people, who live in my town, who had walked with a 12 person tour group from Sarria, that they had not attended the pilgrim office themselves; their guide collected their credenciales when they reached SdC and the group was then presented with their compostelas as...
I suggest you go to a local insurance broker; the cover you need is definitely out there and it may be easier to get help via a broker. Make it clear that you are not doing a "trek", just a long walk!
