    Snoring in albergue!

Prepare by prior adequate consumption of vinto tinto or cognac

    Walking poles solution....

I'm intrigued about the practicality of checking in poles. How do people wrap ? Outbound flight is easy but when returning, what materials do you use? Presumably one doesn't want to carry these. I don't envisage taking a rucksack where they could be put inside or attached and then wrapped with...

Your accommodation doesn't make you a pilgrim!

I was guessing but good for the clarification ! Maybe I was counting the edge (digging for excuses)

Your accommodation doesn't make you a pilgrim!

When staying in albergues, I miss the rich variety of the hosts in various Casa Rural which I visited. Usually happy to talk as well as give you space, and a connection with the country and the people which just doesn't happen in albergues. It's truly a coin with 2 sides ... or 3 including...

    Mental Fatigue

In my experience, mental fatigue sets in from the repetitive cycle, day after day after day, eg SJPdP to SdC. Individual days were not a problem, landscapes, navigation, pace management etc all combining to keep reasonably fresh. I don't personally like podcasts - they require attention of at...

    Long walk home

Thanks for your tip about HUEL

    What's your average pace?

As others have said, there are many factors. But to avoid getting bogged down in the detail, my guidelines for a pleasant unhurried hike with decent size pack (10kg or more) are ( allowing good terrain, bad terrain, bad weather, and accepting short breaks): - accept "worst case" 2.5km p/hour ...

    The Meaning of Life...on Camino

In other parts of your post, you mention some undoubted attractions : - some form of abstinence from normal comforts - some form of escape from routine obligations which however willingly discharged, leave an entrapped feeling - some form of change of environment (travel etc.) - some form of...

    Brand New and need help.

Yep, it can a little bit nerve-tingling for a while ..... and also very exhilarating. As many here have said many times, you can control the amount of "alone time" because you can be alone if you want on the walk and in the evenings, or you can enjoy the company of other pilgrims. My loneliest...

    Brand New and need help.

Alfred, I got my Credencial / passport at the Pilgrim's Office in SJPP. For me, it was one less thing to think about before departure, there will be enough to attend to. And I kinda prefer the SJPP credencial to others I have seen, but they're all special once you receive it. As MichaelSG says...

    Villafranca Manifesto: Camino Future?

There's lots of good stuff and the intent is strong - I agree the camino should be 'protected' and supported. I am not sure about identifying the 100km pilgrims as touristic/lightweight/less serious vs a more dedicated variant. Having just returned from walking the Ingles route from Ferrol...

How Fit Were You at the Start?

About the boots. Have you considered and experimented with different lacing techniques? Do a forum search and a YouTube search. A change of lacing technique changed my acceptable but small niggle boots into a near-perfect fit. Just a thought.

How Fit Were You at the Start?

I walked the Frances in Nov-13 with minimal preparation. 2 weeks of wearing my boots all day to break them in. No practice walks other than 3 dog walks p/day, probably no more than 10k p/d. I'm not saying it was easy at the start. I had challenges. I struggled with my energy levels and I...

    Selfish? Self Indulgent?

Hi Robo. Constantly putting yourself last or towards bottom of list will eventually compromise your ability to be of service to others, staff and clients. It may be because of a serious health issue, or just burn-out. The symptom is unimportant, the consequence is what matters. Selfish or...

    Walking speed

Absolutely right. Accepting that and then also accepting it is not a challenge or race is key. I read the latter many times before I left on my first Camino, thought I had absorbed this into my attitude, and then needed 2 weeks to realise there was 1 person I had overlooked .... myself ! Even...

Why mention miles when Europe uses km's ?

"We Brits" are very comfortable with fl.oz. - it's mainland Europe who want mls, so we'll stick with the correct side ;-)

I have solved the carrying water problem

Safe water is widespread although technically not everywhere. There are some fountains and public taps labelled "non potable". I'm not sure I'd want to drink from them even with a life straw but I guess that is what emergency kit is for.

Why does everyone have an opinion!

There is a dangerously steep hillside - not quite a cliff - near the highest point of the day, where it is very hard to stay standing and probably impossible to walk down, but if you meet it, you're off track !!

Why does everyone have an opinion!

I do not sense that the original poster is actually worried about any of these issues at all. It's just how you deal with people saying these things. Just bear in mind that these naysayers Are simply worried for you, love you, and are concerned for you. Just thank them for their love and...
