    Pilgrimage or vacation?

Interestingly, my two sisters and I just had our first "Sisters' Adventure", and my older sister asked pointedly what we expect on a vacation. We each had very different takes on "a vacation". My older sister especially. She likes to go to get pampered and not have to arrange things or make...

    Shower/bathroom etiquette in the albergues?

I find most Americans are more modest about nudity. Of course, there are variations from family to family and person to person. But overall, I find americans are more modest now than when I was little. For example, when I go camping with teenagers they will take turns changing privately in...

    Shower/bathroom etiquette in the albergues?

I was a bit worried about this as well, as I was walking with my 13 yo son. But it's really not a big deal. Shower quickly, dress quickly. I turn my back on the room to change my shirt and bra. I changed my underwear when I had more privacy when at the toilet. But others changed in their...

    Walking with a guide

A friend of mine walked the camino with her father, and they were part of a tour group with guides. They stayed at hotels and experienced fancy dinners and ate packed lunches. They also had a support van if anyone didn't want to walk. Their luggage was carried for them, and I believe the...

Nicknaming the People You Walk With

On our first time walking, my son and I met: The Mexican Canadian who listened to and broadcast loudly podcasts on canadian government to prepare for his citizenship test. Much as we love Canada, we avoided him and the free information. The French Italian. (French guy, lived in Italy.) The...

Camino etiquette - passing others on less-busy caminos

I say that if you and the other walker are both walking up hill and both gasping for breath, stop and nod at each other, then strike up a conversation about the view so you can both have a breather.

Legal Changes Coming for Spanish Accommodations

I can't sign the petition because as an american I don't have a Dni. Is there any other way to show my support for donativos?

They still ride horses, don't they?

I ride at a stable that focuses on trail and endurance riding (not dressage). Though we do go on hunter pace rides for fun. (Well, me for fun, others for competition.) I've taken the Endurance Camps there. So I get to set up a tent, put up a small electric fence paddock, care for my horse...

They still ride horses, don't they?

I'm working on endurance riding and getting me in shape as well as my horse. So many people think "Oh, you just sit on a horse and the horse does all the work." Those people obviously don't ride daily. Here's an idea! Howabout an endurance race across Spain on the Camino? There is one...

They still ride horses, don't they?

Good morning, There are a number of riding tour groups that offer an equestrian camino. You and your niece can spend hours (like me) looking at rides at equitour, and hiddentrails.com, and unicorntrails.com, and also look at the pilgrim horse guy mentioned above. They all have camino rides in...

Where can I find prayer opportunities on my way?

I didn't mean it as a dig, but as a sigh about not being able to be open about my faith, here and where I live. The moderators responded in a positive and caring way which made me happy.

Where can I find prayer opportunities on my way?

I am roman catholic, and when a friend asked me if I prayed the whole time I was walking, I laughed and said no. But then on reflection, I realized that yes, walking itself was a prayer. Talking and caring for others is prayer. My son and I began our day with the pilgrims prayer. We would...

What to carry in my wallet

I bought a small nylon light weight wallet that was big enough for euro bills. However, important never loose items (extra atm card, passport, extra credit card), went into a more secure location. Regarding more secure locations: As the weather was cool when I walked (spring and fall), I...

To book or not to book?

We used the brierly guides and just didn't pay attention to the daily stops. We usually walked longer than suggested, and so ended up somewhere in the middle of brierly's planned day.

To guide book or not to guide book?

I used the Brierly on the Frances. A hard copy with maps. Also, before I walked I read some of "The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago: The Complete Cultural Handbook" by Gitlitz and Davidson. Then downloaded it onto my kindle and in the evenings at albergues or during a stop along the way, I would...

    Storage in Refugios/Albergues

I just leave my pack outside when I go into a shop or cafe... In some places, I have used a zip tie to connect the pack to a chair or a table or something. Then no one can just grab it without a heck of a clatter. My valuables are on always on me.

"The profile of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago: 90% are Catholics, 48% do so for spiritual reasons"

Hey! I have friends in Belfast and sometimes we talk religion. My friend and I are from mixed families (one parent protestant and one catholic). :) But you're right, we don't talk about it at the pub.

    Early morning coffee

Anacin and Excedrin Migraine contain caffeine if you need it right when you wake up. -- I'd just hold off till you reach a cafe.

Tradition…. When to start wearing your scallop shell?

I have made pilgrimage to Rome (so I can wear a key), and to Santiago (a shell). Now I just need to get to Jerusalem (palms).
