You know, it's funny. Walking from Paris we were on a lot of Roman roads, but somehow it never occurred to me what they were until I reached a stretch that was actually called the chemin de César.
In the US it's usually called Tronchuda or Portuguese kale;

I've grown it because I live in FL and it's more heat-resistant than other brassicas, but I can't say I like it much for anything except Caldo Gallego. Quite bitter. Very handsome plant, though.
I thought you all would find this post from another forum as amusing as I did:
I remember watching an HGTV international show where the American male was looking for an apt. in Spain. The show started out saying it was very important to him that his home be near topless bars. He discussed how...
As for the USPS, if you frequently make trips longer than 6 weeks, it may be worth getting a P.O. Box. You can have your mail forwarded to that and they will hold any amount of mail for quite a long time--not sure exactly how long, but it's at least 3 months.
Personally, I hate GPS etc, but I'm old enough to have known that you can manage without those things and that getting lost isn't a major tragedy, but I think there are a great many folks in the world now who have never known that or have long forgotten it and their stress level without these...
And also at the Tour St. Jacques.
I brought a shell from home and certainly when walking in France from Paris it was recognized by many people as a sign that I was a pilgrim rather than a hiker. Had a lot of interesting conversations because of it.
Someone posted a link here awhile ago to an article about pilgrimages in the middle ages. There was one medieval pilgrim who said you need to bring a big bag of money and an even bigger bag of patience.
So I just kept chanting "suitcase of patience, suitcase of patience" as my mantra during...
I haven't walked the Frances, but one thing that was just so hard for us on the first part of the Voie de Tours was the number of taxis who were obviously cruising us, hoping that we would give in and hail them. Such temptation, especially in the pouring rain. We did get as far as having the...
Chartres has what must be the most beautiful and elaborate version of this kind of light display every spring/summer. For a few days they do many of the other historic sites and bridges as well. Very lovely, although I was afraid it would be a bit Disney. It isn't, at all.
Of course, they're...
How funny, Kurt. I also grew up in South Florida and I find Mexicans far easier to understand than Cubans and many South Americans, since they tend to speak at a much slower pace, more akin to the speed of American English.
Just updating this to say I received the book and it looks just swell, but it came shrink-wrapped, so I haven't been able to read any of it. I gift-wrapped it right away to avoid the temptation to rip off the cellophane and have a read before Christmas.
Has anyone read or seen Compostelle: Recettes du chemin by Anne-Marie Minivelle and Sophie Brissaud?

A friend of mine walked with me a few days from Paris and he's a trained chef who speaks Italian, Spanish, several Italian and Caribbean dialects, and some...
Yes, NavyBlue, you're right about the song, but back in the 60s/70s my parents were involved with the Cursillo movement, and one of their things was called the Ultreya. That's the earliest use of the word I know of. I'd really like an original source for it as being medieval. Anyone got one...
Yes, that's right. I sometimes mark a forum read when I'm not that interested in going back over every thread ever posted there, but I'm interested in being able to tell quickly when there are new responses/threads.
