Excellent post, Wanderer64. Those are some of the reasons I carry a private room with me (my tent), especially how much I value my sleep. Insufficient sleep at night means no walking the next day for me.
I'm not a morning person, either. That's one of the reasons I prefer tenting: go to bed and get up on your own schedule and you won't bother anyone else doing so, either.
You can fold up the back of your hat brim so it doesn't knock against your pack. That bothers me, too, so on several hats I use for hiking I just sewed a snap on the brim in the back so I can snap it up and out of the way when I have my pack on, then undo it when I don't.
